I didn't really see that as being the joke, though. It seemed to be more making fun of the captain for using idioms without thinking about how they would sound to someone from a different culture, especially if it DID seem to be offensive. Like, I don't think we were supposed to think M'Ress...
Absolutely! If they did core-class updates of Pretenders Finback, Bugly, Submarauder, Longtooth, and Octopunch, all of them could be easily repainted as Battle Beasts / Beastformers.

I've always loved Q's interactions with the Enterprise crew. Though he acts antagonistic much of the time, it becomes clear throughout the series that Q considers humanity his "pet" species, with Picard in particular being one of his favorites. Much of what he does that seems to be cruel...
