Biden has no need for political capital anymore. He'll never hold elected office again, but he and his family may very well be targeted for reprisals by the incoming administration.
So it would be almost weird if he hadn't done this.
Unfortunately, it's going to fuel Republican whataboutism...

We've got Michael Flynn, who lied to the FBI, and Roger Stone, convicted of witness tampering and obstruction. Both heroes of the Russia investigation cover-up.
Then there's Paul Manafort, whose crimes were so blatant even his ostrich jacket...
Yes. That's what I'm suggesting. I mean, just look at the worm he wants to put in charge of the FBI.

Trump has made it clear that he's going to task his DoJ with persecuting his enemies, real or perceived. I can't blame Biden for wanting to shield his son from that. I don't like it, but I understand it.
