"Did you know? I'm actually part of a Combiner."

"No way, really?"

"Yeah. Big one, too."

"What's it called?"

"Rocket."

"Not very imaginative. What part do you turn into?"

"I'm the Rocket ear."

Okay, so I got the Kitty/Colossus 2-Pack from Amazon today. But I could only get one because it's pricey. But I'm left with a very hard choice to make. How do I display Kitty?

I could seriously go either way.

So continuing my current The Phantom of the Opera kick, I decided to finally get something I've been wanting on and off since I was a kid. McFarlane Toys' 1998 The Phantom of the Opera set, part of their "Monsters Playset" series. The figures were all four inches tall, with limited articulation, and based on various horror movie and novel characters. They were sold in playsets that called to mind famous setpieces from the stories in question.
None of them were based on any specific versions- famous movie versions of these characters all fall under the IP of big movie studios, but a lot of these stories originated as books that are in the public domain. And it was 1998... Todd probably loved the idea of doing his own XTREME thing with these characters anyway. For the Phantom that manifests in some... interesting... ways.

So the setup is Erik's organ, Box 5, and the chandelier. Strictly speaking this arrangement only makes sense in the loosest way, but as a sort of "slice of the story" diorama it's very fun. The box includes a stand that either figure can stand on, and the chandelier gets its own chain which means it can sway menacingly.

They've weirdly chosen to go for a sort of "pirate" theme here. Erik has a purple cape, mask, and a weird gold dragon collar thing, along with a very pirate-y sword. Erik with a sword isn't all that unique an idea, but they made it a very... nautical... looking sword. His mask has also been re-imagined as a sort of pirate bandana that's been extended to go over the top of his face. And the other figure- who I assume is supposed to be Raoul de Chagny- is just straight up in swashbuckling garb. I mean... Raoul was a French Navy officer in the book so I GUESS it works? I donno... again, working swordplay into The Phantom of the Opera isn't a new idea. It was there long before Todd and was there long after this set vanished from store shelves, but specifically leaning into a pirate angle is kind of out there. I'm not complaining. These figures, limited as they are, have a lot of character and detail, as is common with McFarlane Toys figures. They're great fun. It's just an odd choice, is all.

Erik is a pretty unique take. Again, the purple, the gold dragon collar, and the pirate-y styles are all new. His face is very skull like, which calls to mind his description in the books, without referencing any copyrighted movie or musical look. I like that he's got stitches all over his jacket and pants. He lives in a basement after all, he probably doesn't have easy access to replacement pants.

Still, the oddest thing has to be Raoul's(?) "mask." Raoul doesn't have a mask. Hell, no one else in the story really does, outside of Erik. And it's a gold dragon's head. At first I thought it might be an alternate mask for Erik. That doesn't work, though. You can get it on his head, but it's very loose. It fits Raoul(?) very snugly, though. I GUESS it could be Todd's interpretation of what Raoul wears to the Masquerade? Maybe? I donno. It's easily the weirdest inclusion in this very weird set.

Weird, but not bad. I adore Phantom, and I'm happy I finally got my hands on this thing.

Raoul(?) and Steel Hook, since they both look ready to sail the high seas.

And Erik with my collection of Eriks. The 90s nutcracker, the NECA Ben Cooper Halloween costume figure, and the NECA 1925 Lon Chaney Red Death Masquerade figure. Along with my custom, which was also primarily made of McFarlane Toys parts.
