Hasbro had a livestream for collector junk, while leaks and teases slipped out for the kid-centric ActionVerse. Old Republic fans are going to be eating good this fall, as will fans of the Retro Collection. The packaging for the SDCC exclusive Anakin vs Ventress set feels a touch anachronistic. I know by the time the Clone Wars MicroSeries was available on home media…most of us were well into switching to DVDs (I remember putting them in my Xbox to play the game demos!)

For ActionVerse fans, the following has cropped up the past few days on the webs:
-The big release for the holiday season is a Razor Crest playset, which converts from a Razor Crest vehicle into a small playset, seeming styled after the Hutt arena teased in the trailers. Included are figures of both Mando and Grogu. Teased on the back is an ActionVerse Embo figure, which was later leaked in a package shot. Retail will be about $85
-Last reveal/leak is a Team up box with Mando and Grogu (again…) with Rotta the Hutt. The sole available image can be seen in the livestream images above.

I have to admit, a Razor Crest playset makes a great deal of sense. But I'd have had it unfold into the inside of the ship so you have more space to set up scenes or the like so you could have the ship as a toy and then open it up to make a shelf diorama. Given how the inside of the ships on camera never seem to look like they could fit INSIDE the ship itself...

Though it makes sense to have a two-for-one like they did, for kids who saw the trailers or the movie itself and who might not think to just go outside and use some sand. Darth Vader would approve.

I'm loving the KotOR and TOR figures. We are about halfway to getting the main KotOR cast. Just need T3, Canderous, Jolee, and Juhani.

And while I was a big beefy Zabrak Commando, it is cool to see the TOR Havoc Squad Republic Trooper anyways. And Steele is awesome to see as we can have both Bastilla and her.

Just realized this from a discussion elsewhere: as of the end of Ahsoka S1, the stage is set to do a version of the Thrawn trilogy:

They have Thrawn and the Chimaera about to return and become the largest/most visible Imperial remnant, the cloning facility at Mount Tantiss trying to create Force-sensitive clones (established in The Bad Batch and The Mandalorian), the Great Mothers (now riding along with Thrawn) standing in for C'baoth.

Boba Fett taking over Tatooine could stand in for Talon Karrde's criminal empire, though that would possibly position Fennec Shand as this universe's Mara Jade. . .

It wasn't this one, was it? 😉
Granted that was a while back, but yes, as the Classic and a prequel Trilogy eras get mined out, and as High Republic and Sequel trilogy reactions make Lucasfilm skittish about trying different eras, a retread of Thrawn's War seems likely. TVC's Luuke Skywalker figure suggests further testing of waters (though it's not proof, as they've been doing KOTOR in the Black series, and I believe that's still Legends-exclusive.

Boba's... rather haphazard career suggests that there's still room for Karrde to play a role (particularly if Kryze doesn't push Fett's buttons or Fenn Shysa can't persuade him that a change of dynasties is in order.) I'm torn between wanting more Ming-Na Wen in my Star Wars and wanting to see how Karrde, Fett and Hondo might team up....of course, we could get both.

It's been rumored that The Mando and Grogu movie is a set up for their Thrawn plans. And they really have been slowly working through some Thrawn Trilogy figures in recent years. We did get the Black Series four pack last year with Luke, Luuke, Mara, and C'baoth. And I already had the Heir to the Empire Luke and Dark Force Rising Mara they did a few years back with the comic line. If anything give me Rukh, Pelleon, or Talon Karrde. But I don't think it's by any means setting up any direct correlation to future media plans there. They just know there is still a fan base willing to buy up that specific Legends material.

And KotOR does remain one of the most popular pieces of media still, cannon or not. I mean we still are supposedly getting a KotOR remake let alone a new sequel game. If anything Carth and Mission could be based on current models for the remake for all we know. I was more surprised seeing TOR get love with Satele and the Republic Havoc Squad Trooper. I mean Satelle isn't that far off from Bastilla but it does look more detailed in shots. But hey TOR is still running and if YouTube vids are anything to go by, people are still willing to try it out years later. I think there is a new piece of story content coming soon.

Out of topic but I saw this 5min d&d trailer (that feels like a movie) and the villain just screams Cad Bane. Had to share.

So, I saw the movie (btw, my local theatre was already sold out of most of the swag. Not sure that bodes well for me getting the Castle Grayskull bucket).
It was…okay. But, like, a GOOD okay. If I had been truly able to turn off my “nerd brain”, I would even be willing to call it excellent.

Broadly, it was a fun couple hours with a bad ass bounty hunter. Think too hard, and it’s clear that the project is some Frankenstein of season 4 concepts and differing corporate strategies. It follows season 3…but it doesn’t really rely on much knowledge of the franchise besides what is well known in popular culture (and a VERY brief blurb at the start). It is VERY accessible, but doesn’t really change the dynamic of the character that might carry into another potential season. But it also feels more “classically Star Wars” than many of the other Disney projects, especially the sequel trilogy. The film knows when to just “get out of its own way” and trust the audience will buy into this world and characters. It doesn’t bog itself down with unnecessary exposition, but it shows enough for inattentive audiences to grasp things like the character dynamics and the different settings. There is just a sense of “wonder” that other Star Wars projects kind of forget in service of THE LORE.

That said, I was left wanting AS A STAR WARS NERD because the film does touch on some interesting ideas concerning species longevity and how that impacts future generations. Much of this felt like a framework for a full 8-episode season, where I think a LOT of these quiet moments and ideas could be more easily expanded upon. Then again, a standard TV season might not have the budget for some of the great action sequences that were put to film. Rotta the Hutt actually turned into a decent new character to the canon, despite his inglorious start back in the Clone Wars 2009 pilot film.

In some respects, the film reminds me a bit of an anime compilation film, where they took episode highlights, added/expanded some animation sequences and released it as a film. Compare Macross Plus’s 4 episode OVA series to its film version to get an idea of what I mean.

Is it bad? No…if you go in with adjusted expectations. I think this paraphrase from Bob “MovieBob” Chipman sums up the film quite well: “It has puppets, monsters, lasers and spaceships. What the eff else you want?” But I still question whether or not all this really warranted a film push besides Disney REALLY jonesing for some sort of “win” after the response to the last couple theatrical films and seeming disinterest in the streaming projects.

Sidebar: Nerdy stuff! Another thing Bob Chipman remarked was how this like a “toy box movie”, and I kind of agree! For long time fans, seeing the old mini-rig the INT-4 and the old Amanaman get used in a modern media project is another level of fan service. The Amanaman species was used to GREAT effect and it’s sad that Hasbro likely won’t be doing any sort of fresh toy with this exposure in the near term. Lots of big monsters and great droid mercenary designs that will probably never get toys because of the “way” toy companies operate these days. Outside of Lego.

Saw Mandalorian and Grogu last night. First time I have gotten to a film on release night in years if not like a decade.

It was really fun. It feels like a whole Season of the show transformed into one film. In a good way. You can sit there afterwards and go "that would be an episode, and THAT would be an episode." but you'll also be talking about all the awesome and fun and funny moments as you do it. Everything in it is spectacularly made. Fun, exciting, beautifully designed, shot, and animated.

And Rotto the Hut is the Star Wars character find of the decade. I will happily watch him in anything please.

-ZacWilliam, if you think Star Wars should be a big immersive weird fun action packed pulp space adventure with lovable characters and heart you should go see this ASAP.

I expected Rotta to be an irritating Easter Egg. Not at all, at all.

I had fun at the movie and kind of appreciated a regular adventure, non-epic entry. A couple issues.
The chain of custody on Rotta is hard to follow. For some reason the gun-runner crash-landed on Nal Hutta. If he was secretly working for the Twins, I don't know why they shot him down. If he wasn't, I don't know why his ship flew to their planet. And then...in the end we learn that Coyne (the character and the actor have the same name) and the Twins were working together and I can't straighten it out. Coyne was having Rotta killed and that's what the Twins wanted, but they didn't know? If they wanted to do it themselves, could they not convince Coyne to let them?

I want to go see it again.

I'm unlikely to be able to cause time, money and Masters of the Universe coming up. But it was SO good and all the love for it on my feed really is making me wish I could go watch it one more time this weekend.

-ZacWilliam, all the special effects shine on the big screen, awesome monsters, Harryhausen vibes, and the film is just so damn fun.

Edit: Kept seeing folks posting these so just for fun I made one with my updated rankings. To be fair everything above #9 is a "Love" and everything below #9 is a "LIKE" there isn't a Star Wars I wouldn't watch. :)
