Another thread I can dive into here. I also was not a MOTU kid; until relatively recently it was just internet osmosis, Skeletor memes, conversations with a friend a few years older than I am who
was a MOTU kid and is still a fan as an adult, and the live-action Dolph Lundgren movie having a high spot on my "best B movies" list.
Last year I picked up a loose Origins Skeletor to add to my Halloween stuff.
Then earlier this summer the Youtubes routed me to
Skeletor's Best Insults (ah, the things you could get away with saying as a cartoon character in the 80s), and I binged a few episodes of the Filmation series just for the cheese factor. And Cthulhu help me, I rabbit holed. An evil overlord has to have a minion or two, and someone to fight, right? Not going completionist or vintage, but thanks mostly to a couple different local comic shops, my current desk fight
had gotten up to a 4v4.
Capsule thoughts on the collecion so far:
Skeletor - c'mon, what is there to say except I
like the memes, dammit. Iconic for a reason, even if his toy is about as basic as it gets. I think this is the wave 1 figure, since he's got no alternate hands, and just the half sword and staff for accessories. But it's enough, nyeh!
Horde Trooper - fantastic retro robot man and I severely wish his other colors weren't so hard to find for reasonable prices. The red Prime from last year looked fantastic. Almost makes me want Trapjaw parts to give him a gun arm. And the torso-exploding gimmick works really well.
Beast Man - the choice of blue eyeshadow and underwear is certainly...a thing, with his color scheme on the toy-accurate version, but I needed a henchman! No problems with the rubber arm guards, and while the whip isn't poseable its shoelace-like nature at least lets it not hang totally limp.
Necraconda - this was an awesome find at MSRP. I don't give two flips about the snakemen characters, but I think he just looks the coolest out of them. The metallic blue-green + GITD color scheme is impressive as hell (and gives me PacRim kaiju vibes), and the snake tail is way more stable than I thought it would be.
Battle Armor He-Man - had to get
a Man of He, after all. The rotating drum for the damage effect is neat, and at least he's got
some armor on. I know Eternia normally operates on Frazetta Rules, but still! Poses good with all his weapons, extra head, the big effect for the sword is a little heavy for the wrists but works well enough.
Cartoon Orko - cartoon accuracy is a wash; wish he had the older version's flight stand though, 'cause it let him tilt and lean, and maybe a magic zap piece instead of his uncle's beard. The 'HERO' medal is cute, and I'm glad the reverse has detail so you can display that side out.
Sorceress - I snagged her for cheap just to check out the female buck; not bad! I didnt realize how much the headdress gets in the way of the neck, but the birdy cape works well enough and a staff is fine enough of an item for the basic toy. She's perfectly functional, and one more for team good guys.
Concept Art Syclone - was a rando Target find in an otherwise demolished toy section. I know zip about this guy, but the retro spaceman aesthetic the concept art version has going on is really my jam. And while it does lack the effect parts and whatnot, he
does have a post-Blue-Man-group head option.
And I say
had gotten up to a 4v4, because a local comic shop had MOTU crossover Lion-O on the shelf. I've been keeping an eye on the Thundercats mashup because they were my other childhood character-driven cartoon, and this is the first time I've seen any of the figures in the wild. He's pretty spiffy! The dude buck is the same as it always is, but I really like the Cats of Eternia look with the lion shoulderpad and barbarian gear; and having the parts for the classic appearance is never a bad option. The sword came out a little banana'ed because of how the bubble is shaped, but hot water treatment took care of that, and I appreciate that Lion-O can more or less do The Pose (unlike the various He-Men thus far). The comic is what it is, but if the art's close to the actual toys' appearance Panthro's armor is gonna be pretty wild.
