Combiners: Unified colors or Rainbow Warriors? Lets discuss!

I would die for a set of Nemesis-colored Wildking beasts.
This post triggered an idea for a discussion. With combiners, do you prefer a unified color scheme, like G1 Devastator or the Ruination redecos, or do you like your combiners to resemble Voltron or Megazords with all different colored limbs? Or, is it situational?

Personally, I like the unified look most of the time. It gives the combiner a "one complete entity" kind of vibe. That said, it's also cool to be able to pick out the individual parts of the gestalt whole, and that's easier to do with individual colors, so I don't hate the multicolored combiners, either.

Generally I prefer more unified colors, unless the disparate colors tell a story. For example, Swindle sticks out among the drabber colors of the Combaticons, because he's more interested in profiteering from the war than fighting for fighting's sake. Or Abominus and Monstructor being garish and clashy, because they're more monstrous and beastial than the more unified combiners like Predaking and Piranacon.

I don't know. I'm going back and forth in my head on this. I think I prefer a unified color scheme, but at the same time, G1 Bruticus is my favorite combiner and he's not unified.

I like both! A mixture of colors emphasizes that it's a big robot made of smaller robots. But also, sometimes color coordination in fun. I really like Victorion with her rust and oxidization scheme.

Outside of traditional combiners, I enjoy the occasional Mini-Con color-matched to a bigger guy, specifically that Takara promotinal team matched to Cybertron Metroplex. Those three are a dream wish-list item. I also like the WIndblade that's colored like Fort Max.

I like the all-colors Energon Optimus team, but I also like the coordinated Wing Saber combination.

Also, Megatronia: Each limb has its own color, but there's the unifying black throughout. I'd like to see something like that for Wild King Nemesis Prime. Animal limbs that are black and some other color.

I like unified/similar colors if there's something about the character builds to help easily tell them apart, but otherwise prefer different colors. Like, the Constructicons and Seacons are fine, they're all different construction vehicles/sea monsters, most of them have identifiable kibble or integrated bodily bits to help tell them apart. Gun to my head, though, I will never be able to tell the Aerialbot limbs apart.

One or the other. Nothing in between. Asymmetry is something you either do or don't. If it's a mostly non-unified color scheme but two of the limbs match, or the torso and one limb match, blah.

I don't really care, as long as the end result is a huge, imposing combiner that is ready to do battle (or you know, look good on my shelf).

Or a small, adorable combiner in the case of Monstructor.

Hint hint, Hasbro. I'm not letting up on this.

I like both.

I like making the individuals, well, individual, but I can also get behind a repaint that unifies them.

Like with the Aerialbots, I so wanted a repaint of the set back in the day in like, stealth colors. And while they're already mostly kinda uniform already, I thought a sort of "tech" repaint of the Technobots would be neat. Like maybe some sort of transparent color with grid line tampos over them, or just something that looked virtual.

This was all back around G2, I think, btw. RiD at the latest. (I get that the transparent idea may not be the way to go now...)

I also like both, enough so that I don't think I can say I like one approach more than the other.

Devastator is my favorite combiner, and the uniform green and purple probably contribute to that. I also really like Predaking. Each of those teams really feel like a cohesive unit with a common purpose. And in Predaking's case, it really ties in with how they form an especially effective combiner due to that team synergy.

On the other hand, I really like stuff like Voltron, Energon Optimus, Wild King, etc. When each limb is totally distinct, there is some appeal there too. As mentioned, Megatronia's being mostly unified with a splash of distinct color for each limb works pretty well too.

While I don't have issues like Haze being able to distinguish, say, the different Aerialbots from each other, I do feel that some like Superion, and especially Menasor, are in this weird in-between state where they aren't fully unified, yet still come off as not having enough differences to be interesting. They somehow end up being less interesting than either fully unified or fully distinct. I think CoffeeHorse really nailed it on that.

With Menasor in particular, I feel like him almost but not quite matching fits. The Stunticons aren't so much a team as a gang of thugs that Motormaster keeps in line through intimidation and brute strength. Their semi-unity, and Motormaster forming most of Menasor, reflects that fear of him is the only thing holding them together.

I admit I confuse a few of the Stunticons and ALL the Arielbots. Part of the reason I waited till Bruticus was confirmed was I wanted a mix of alt-modes, it's why my first CW combiner was Defensor. For color, I am good with either extreme, simply because I've seen both done well. Devestator is the classic. Abominus is a mess. Both are great. I do hope that if they do Monstructor they keep the chaos, rather that's inner-robot style or monster-shell version. I don't know how they will retool the Dinoforce/Dinobots into monsters, but they did it with POTP Dinos, then Terrorcons, THEN Seacons, so I doubt it's impossible and after Dinoking, I'd love a new set of Core Combiners.

What does that mean?
  • The pieces are out there
  • We've used those molds a couple of times
  • He won't be dinosaurs
Huh? The "pieces" or "molds" are dinosaurs (Dinoking/Volcanicus), so if he's not dinosaurs... the pieces... aren't out there... what?

That's when you give up and refresh Pulse a lot when they say they're having a Transformers Tuesday in hope of seeing what on Earth they're talking about. I'm having a similar issue with the Combaticons after SDCC, 'wait and see' is my best option.

It's secret code for "Shh! We don't wanna reveal yet that we're retooling the Dinobots into monsters like how Takara retooled the Terrorcons and Chromia into the Seacons." 🤫
