That is actually part of the secret sauce of Mel Brooks movies. He actually enjoys the source material he's poking fun at. It's also why the Cornetto Trilogy from Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg work so well.

Men in tights, was great when it came out, but it really doesn't hold up as well today. Dracula Dead and Loving it, I enjoyed as Lesile Nelson and Brooks together was great. I need to check that out. To be or not to be is a great early film of his as is High Anxiety. 12 chairs isn't a comedy though, so don't expect much from that film.

Not to be left out, FX is reportedly developing a pilot for “Very Young Frankenstein”, a prequel to the iconic Mel Brooks comedy. Brooks will executive produce, joined by the executive team behind FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows”. Reportedly, Stefanie Robinson will write and show run the project, while Taika Waititi will produce and direct.
Previously, 20th Century and Hulu joined to produce “History of the World, Part 2”.

...How would that work?

I mean, I guess they could go the "Young Sheldon" route and just have him as a little kid visiting his grandfather? I guess?

Taika Waititi's great - but I hope they reign him in a little bit when he needs it.
