I use them if I get stuck, or at the end to make sure I got everything correct, and didn't miss something.

Otherwise, I prefer to go in fresh the first time.

That's what I mean. Some people like to figure it out themselves, others use them if they get stuck, others use them from the start. I don't think I've ever seen a "debate" about this, and this is the fandom that debated Rumble and Frenzy's colour schemes.

Usually it's just people stating their preferences.

I'm legit too afraid of breaking a toy the first time around so I always use the instructions for the first few goes. Then I'll do a couple transformations without the instructions to see if I've got it in my memory now.

(I still use the instructions for Magmatron because of the inherit complexity of it being three separate animals that combine into one robot though)

This has been my opinion on many lines since at least as far back as RotF. I don't want to miss a critical step and break something. Even with the instructions, stuff can get broken (looking at you, Netflix/Kingdom Cheetor...)

I use them for stickers. Unless I can't be bothered to use the stickers. Then, usually not. I've had very few Transformers I couldn't figure out with some patience and maybe some pictures.

I did use them for a few spots on Haslab Omega Prime, mostly for Blue Bolts and how to attach the stands. But I consider that a special case, between the breakage reports and being something I'll likely never be able to replace.

"Debate" is perhaps a strong word for it, but I have seen a lot of back-and-forth discussion from back in the day.

Of course, Hasbro pretty much fostered the idea of it being a "challenge" themselves...

Naturally, they had to stop after one kid was beaten to death by another using a Supreme Cheetor as an improvised club, thus leading to the cancellation of Fortress Maximus in RiD 2001 over safety concerns, but it had its moment.

To be honest, I used to rely solely on the instructions for the first transformation. However, because video reviews show so much detail and tend to point out QC quirks and issues, I rely on them for the first pass-through these days. My MO is generally to watch a video review, pay attention to the main points, then dive in on my own - only coming back to the video if I get stuck.

Goes even farther back than that.

Oh, shoot! Yeah, I knew it felt like I was forgetting something.

Didn't they even seal his instructions so you wouldn't be tempted to look, or something?
