The nitpick about the verification of the parent's message being "yeah, that's legit. Let's just carry on" bothered me a bit, too when I was watching the movie, but I do understand not wanting to devote a larger chunk of screen time to expanding that as a sub-plot. Had I been making the movie...

Man, those things were everywhere. Zoo/Aquarium/Museum gift shops, discount stores, Easter baskets. They weren't GOOD, but they do have a certain charm. Care was definitely put into the animal modes even if the robot modes are lacking.
