I found this at Target. It was only $10. So I figured "what the heck! Why not?"

And out of box.

Now, just for evidence, let me show that this is not my first toy in this size class.

Okay...so, having had these others, I wasn't expecting the same articulation you get in the Legends line. I wasn't even expecting the articulation you'd get with a 3-inch line. But holy crap the articulation is just...blech!

But I don't mind about that as much. Just give me a statue that just stands there...that would be fine. But they didn't even do the black trim on the boots? Really? And the back of the figure has no paint aps whatsoever!

I mean, I wasn't expecting much, truly. A 12 inch figure for $10, I absolutely was not expecting much. But couldn't they have at least gotten the black trim on the boots?

I was originally going to pass, as I got the Iron Man TAS repaint of the modular armour with the proton cannon, and I was happy with it so did I need another crack at the design so soon?

Still, the improvements seemed promising and it gave me another crack at Spiral who I missed during the first go-around with her so I bit and I'm glad I did.

This is an all around improvement in terms of articulation compared to the last time they did this design. He's also a bit heftier, which ya know... suit of armour and all.

The really cool thing is that most of the accessories from that earlier release are compatible with this new version. Want to give him the previous version's gripping hands so he can hold the proton cannon? Easy. Want to give him the unhelmeted Tony Stark head or the s1 TAS head from the previous version? Those work too. Wanna give him the previous version's blue energy ball? Yep... still works.
So if you happen to have the previous version, that compatibility helps. It feels like that previous release still enriches the new one, if that makes sense.

The only accessory from that previous version that doesn't work on the new version is the uni beam. The indent needed to connect it isn't there on the new one. So it won't clip in. I cheated to get the effect, by using the chest energy effect part from the Power Rangers LC Phantom Ranger.

Some examples...

New figure with the previous version's TAS s1 head (and the ToyBiz version).

So there are two releases. The first was a Marvel Legends retro card styled after the old ToyBiz Iron Man TAS releases. It was an animation accurate repaint of the metallic modular armour released in the main Marvel Legends line, and came with an alternate mulleted Tony Stark head, an alternate TAS s1 helmet, a uni beam effects part, a glowing energy ball effects part, and a MVC style proton cannon, complete with stand and firing effects part. Plus two extra sets of hands.

The newer version is part of Marvel Legends' Gamerverse subline, and came in a two pack with Spiral. This version is a mostly new take on the same design, bulking out the proportions and bit to better match that old MVC style, and adding butterfly joint articulation. It only comes with one head- the same as the TAS s2 helmet, with blue eyes swapped for black- but he has a new gesturing hand and a new pointing hand, as well as bulked out blast effects and a wrist shield.

Thing is that most of the first version's accessories are compatible with the new version. All the heads still fit, all of the first version's hands fit the new one, and most of the first version's effects pieces fit the new one. The only accessory from the first version that doesn't work on the new one is the uni beam effect. The first version had an indent in the uni beam to slip the effect into, and the new version doesn't have that indent. Still, it's nice that they made the two versions so backwards compatible. I had the first version, and it helps soften the blow of the new version to essentially double my accessory count and hand count. Heck, between the three heads from the first version and the head on the new version? That's four head options alone.

I'm so irritated you posted that. That is REALLY tempting as an upgrade to the TAS version I got with the Proton Cannon.

I admit I was on the fence. If I'd managed to get a Spiral the last time they released her, I likely would have. Sadly, I never saw her. So another chance to get Spiral plus the upgrade to the TAS look... was enough to get me to bit.

I'm glad I did. The older version is still pretty damn good. No real shame in sticking with it. And you do get the unmasked head, the cannon, and the s1 helmet... but yeah. The updated proportions and articulation on the new one is very, very nice. In the end, I appreciate that they made the accessories so cross compatible. Lessens the sting of buying an upgrade so soon 😅

Nice. I should see how much these run around here...

Though I'd rather be able to get an "ultimate" version with everything, maybe minus the unibeam effect. Or with it, if they remold to let it fit.

Coming soon! Maximum Iron Man!

I jest... but it also seems very possible. It would be one of the easier releases for them to scrounge together. Maybe toss in a TAS s1 Tony head alongside the mullet s2 head just for completion's sake.
