None of you ever knew my brother's best friend's neighbor's math tutor's congressman's driver's Great Dane's groomer's ex-wife's third cousin's dentist's son who had a real Unicron toy. It was half as tall as a refrigerator and played voice clips from the movie in both modes, and had so much die cast you needed a friend to help you transform it, but you had no friends because you're not cool like him

^Yeah, it's out there. I believe that mine came from Pulse, but I've seen him in-store in my area at least once.
Ok. I don't recall seeing any sightings, and I think I only saw the mass retail version once.

Leaders are frustrating. Either they sell out fast or they never get ordered (hard to tell the difference!) or they hang around for a loooong time.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense for Target to commission exclusives then suddenly say no at the last minute. Even if profit margins aren't to their liking, surely they'd lose even more money from not selling the units they already paid for, not even getting into legal problems with broken contracts with Hasbro or the freight/shipping companies. The story just doesn't track when a logistics/inventory screw-up is far more likely. I'm just giving some degree of benefit of the doubt since I have no idea if zombie Ratchet might be one of the dudes who get the leaks from the store systems and might have insider info.

I like how the story also literally just says "cannot talk about this" as if that's a salient point. Either you're an insider and can't give the whole story for whatever reason but just really wanted the clout of looking like you know stuff, or you're just talking out of your ass. And long internet history has taught me to lean towards the latter.

Historically this has always been a nice big red flag, especially as it always shows up so conveniently in the key parts of these spun narratives. "I've said too much already" will always be dropped right as the questions that could unravel it all are asked, and are here. And the tone is always this smug, wry, seen-it-all, "you're gonna want to do x and y if you want to survive" that just helps prop up the "I know something you don't know" mystery of it all. Spare me.

Even if it were an actual insider, "wanting the clout of looking like you know stuff" is not something that sparks confidence, because that sort of person absolutely would reach a point (if they don't START there) where they'd say any old bollocks for attention. Verified, unverified, accurate, inaccurate, authorized, unauthorized, even partly true or absolutely fabricated, it's all fair game for the clicks.

This is quite distinct from Nate, who has said first thing that there's a lot they're not at liberty to discuss, but that they're still able to say they're working on it. This isn't someone dangling a tantalizing secret (that makes them look good for having it in the first place) that is conveniently shielded from scrutiny; it's someone who has picked the safest approved way to deliver a reassurance despite the situation already making them look bad. There's nothing to be gained from doing that but it's the decent thing to do.

I don’t understand how you have a top 5 Transformer (Optimus, BB, Megs, Soundwave, Screamer), and a guy who’s part of a team, and make him an exclusive to a store that has been known to have distribution issues when it comes to exclusives? Starscream should have been a wide release at all retailers. Make one of the inevitable repaints an exclusive: coronation. Comic accurate. Screen accurate. Ghost. Whatever it may be. Make that the exclusive. For this version to be an exclusive is just dumb.

I mean, first of all, a store that's ordering exclusives is typically going to want a compelling one that will sell. That's at least part of the considerations. They're already going out on a limb a bit with the Insecticons, which is a not-small price tag for three randos who just got regular retail releases in the last few years.

But conceptually, I agree with you, and I've said similar things in the past. I can't always get on board with the decision-making process, and can only imagine what that's like. (I do imagine something like the above was a factor.)

Still, functionally, the very idea that there will be inevitable redecos, many of them probably even close enough, is why I think this is a nothingburger.

I mean, what difference does it make? This screen-accurate (SS86 and all) first release is a store exclusive. Later on, another color/detail-tweaked look may be a regular release. We may get a More Screen Accurate or just a Differently Screen Accurate release. Or just a straight-up package refresh of this, as other Target exclusives (Origin Bumblebee) have gotten. Swap SS86MTMTE Starscream and that one around and it's the same situation, except people are FOMO-ing over the other thing instead of this one.

You may test that assumption at your convinience.
