My headcanon is that TFO Dion got turned into Sentinel Prime.

This statement is the reason why Fun Pub wasn't allowed to explore any possibilities about Dion's fate, which was incredibly inconvenient timing since the Club had just put out their new Dion figure, and which led to "Battle Lines" having to stay ambiguous as to who between Dion and Magnum became Ultra Magnus.

The more you find out about Rik Alvarez the more you realize he just ended up picking up odd jobs at Hasbro as Archer tried to justify his friend's paycheque.

I wonder if they inter the dead with a pack of cards or something to keep them busy until it's their turn to come back.
Optimus just gets shuffled through to the robot heaven express lane like when you pay extra at Disney.

He was ultimately fired for being ineffective.

Afterwards, he tried to get back into Fun Pub but they were like "No way!"

This is why I'm open minded about the current CEO's "What would you say you do here?" approach.

I'm okay with this. I'm tired of nobody ever staying dead.

A fair and valid complaint, though it's kinda weird Alpha Trion would save Orion Pax and Ariel, but be like "Nah, **** this guy."

In defence of "Dion wasn't rebuilt," Ariel wasn't supposed to be anyone either. They were both supposed to die to give Optimus some pathos. It was just that during the writing of War Dawn, someone noticed the similarities between Ariel and Elita-1 so they tossed in a quick edit to say she got rebuilt too.
Dion being left dead was just an artifact of the original intent.

From a head canon perspective, however, I always just assume he's Ultra Magnus. We never see Magnus' inner robot in the Sunbow show, but if we assume he has it then it makes sense that Alpha Trion would rebuilt him and Orion at the same time to spec.

The odd thing is, they could have just gone with Opimus-only simply by saying Alpha Trion had to use parts of his friends who couldn't be saved, ala "they live on in you" sort of thing, to also explain the major change in his priorities, but the idea of referencing both 'sacrifice two to save one' and 'how do organ transplants work' is probably not the path a kids show in the 80's would have wanted to go down.

Even over in Japan, there was a G1 manga chapter that first introduced Ultra Magnus (set chronologically between Season 2 and Scramble City), in which Tracks described Magnus as being "like Commander Convoy's younger brother," denoting that they have a closer relationship than most other Autobots.

There was a fic written by Dave "Zobovor" Edwards that basically tied RiD 2001 to Sunbow continuity by way of Ultra Magnus.

And one may well say "wait, what?", but Zob did go through the cartoon history (including "War Dawn"), showing a string of disappointments and choices-not-made-by-the-fickle-finger-of-fate that we can track a progression from "Dion the more mature labourer patiently trying to keep his friend focused on the job" to "Ultra Magnus who didn't want to be leader just because Optimus died" to "Ultra Magnus who leads the Autobots de facto even as he tries to get Rodimus to build his own identity" to "Ultra Magnus who leads a last-ditch defense while the resurrected Optimus goes off to save some other planet" to " 'I'm TIRED of you being Alpha Trion's favourite! I'm TIRED of you being the one after whom Maximals name their protoforms!' "*

It's definitely a story to track down.

*Because a Stack-voiced Magnus would not end a sentence with a preposition!

Yup, they'd much rather take this route:

Like others, I like the idea of Dion becoming Ultra Magnus just for symmetry. I also borrow DW's pre-Optimus name and arc-weld some lore to add more parallels:

Orion Pax -> Optronix -> (receives Matrix from the Council of Ancients) -> Optimus Prime
Ariel -> Elita -> (appointed Leader-1 by the Senate) -> Elita One
Dion -> Magnus -> (recovers an ancient scaled-down [mass-production] version of the Apex Armour) - Ultra Magnus

The moral of "War Dawn" is that the Decepticons are super cool and everyone they meet becomes cooler as a result of it.
Tarn? Is that you?

That being said, it would be interesting to review "War Dawn" (well, this would be more akin to "War 6:30 with a stop for McMuffins") through the post-2000s lens of the origins of Megatron and the factions....as well as modern toy altmode issues that Studio Series has occasionally faced.

Orion Pax: "You can fly?"
Megatron: "Wouldn't expect that from a miner, would you?"
Orion Pax: "Okay, so you have treads on your back, but what do your friends turn into?"
Megatron: "Would you believe that the purple one becomes a submarine?"
