honestly speaking, i think for me it's kinda like...centering the whole celebration of 40 years of TFTM around like just one thing that happened in the movie and not the whole film just comes off as a bit odd to me?

edit: for the record, i do get it like 'oh optimus prime dying was the iconic scene and kids back in 1986 got super upset and this is what made hasbro realize "oh jive kids care about these characters as characters and not just toys" and there are also grown-ass adults who, for some reason, never got over optimus prime dying and are still upset over it' but it's also like...even jokingly why would you do something that appeals to those people? maybe it's just because i hate fandoms but like yeah.

It's just leaning into the main thing the movie IS known for. For better or worse, while this was a key moment for the toy commercial industry in establishing some ideas for using their IP, it's mainly remembered for the surface level Oh My God They Killed Optimus, and that's what's going to be most broadly appealing to build an event around.

I'm weary as hell of the puddle-depth people who still make that a huge part of their collecting personality, but I've just found more satisfaction not engaging with that at all anymore over the last decade or so. Funnily enough, I don't think this is even for them. It seems to deftly seem like it's pandering to them, but just enough to laugh at this part of the history (and not at them) in order to leverage it all in a very detached This Is Marketing-coded way.

This new scene or content or whatever might go a step beyond that, but whatever, I'm just going to stay disengaged. Their discourse was never going to change anyway.

I feel that we went right back to page one of this thread there.

I actually really like TFTM as a film. It is a great story with the loss of our heroes and a next generation taking up the cause including a hero's journey with Hotrod becoming Rodimus Prime. Throw in the threat of Unicron and the discovery of other cool worlds like Quintessa and the Planet of Junk, and you have a pretty epic Sci Fi movie. Honestly, I don't know if they have ever topped it as a film. Maybe TF One, but none of the live action films did.

I'll always have a soft spot for that film, as it and Fire in the Sky were the only two pieces of Transformers media I had access to until filesharing on the internet became a thing. It's wonderfully animated, has memorable dialog, the voice cast is top tier, new and old, and the music absolutely rips. That plot is kind of clownshoes with a very, VERY soggy middle section, but the opening 30 minutes or so (basically up until Starscream gets dusted) is fantastic and the last 10-15 minutes (basically starting with Unicron transforming) is pretty good too.

I rewatched it recently with a group of my friends who have historically been tolerant-to-neutral about Transformers. We all reached basically these same conclusions. I keep coming "back to the well" every five or ten years for specific scenes, but the whole thing remains so damn entertaining to watch.

I had an employee (a little older than me, I think) who was a huge Optimus Prime fan. Not really a Transformers fan, but an Optimus Prime fan, kind of similar to someone being a fan of John Wayne?
Anyway, he would still bitterly complain about Optimus dying in the '86 movie, and would even talk about almost walking out of Revenge Of The Fallen when Optimus died in that movie, too. So, I know that such people exist, and even still hold a grudge over Optimus' death to some extent, but I would like to think that most active fans, if it ever even bothered them, are well and truly over it by now.

It's these kinds of people that are the reason why Saban opted to keep using the Zyuranger suits, (and bring back Tommy) for two more seasons of Power Rangers and not switch out the suits until the fourth season with Zeo. Saban understood what Hasbro didn't.

While killing Optimus was a crass move borne out of a desire to sell new product, I feel like doing a 180 and undermining the storytelling that bore out of that decision created a bad precident that's negatively impacted the franchise ever since. Prime dying has become a super impactful thing that affects thousands, if not millions of kids to being a meme that happens to like two out of three Optimii.

Very much so.

but it's also like...even jokingly why would you do something that appeals to those people? maybe it's just because i hate fandoms but like yeah.

@lastmaximal is right, we have looped around to page one. And I won't repeat myself there.

Still... I think it's worth saying... who cares? I mean it. Who cares? At this point the people who can't get over people who can't get over Optimus dying are just as bad as the people who can't get over Optimus dying!
Just try to keep that straight.

It's been forty years, who cares what side of some arbitrary internet slap fight you were on two decades ago?

It's like the people who saw the first five minutes of the live action Bumblebee movie and went "that was cool but I hate that the wrong people will like this."
Again, who cares, mate? Who? Some chud you don't even know personally who you had an internet spat with back in 2007 may like a new thing? Oh the horror.

We don't even know what Hasbro's cooked up as "additional content" for this thing. It may not "further minimize Rodimus Prime" at all, but so what if it does? So what if they tack on a scene of Optimus waking up in bed and revealing the entirety of the '86 movie was a dream? So what if they do?

Will John Hasbro send Pinkertons to your house to burn your copies of the movie? Smash your Rodimus Prime toys? Burn your season three DVDs and '86 Marvel comics?

Of course not. If you like Rodimus, that media is still there. It will always be there, and you can always engage with it.

I will agree with you, Viola. I hate fandoms. And this is one reason why. No one can let anything go. Ever. Some Gen Xers saw their robot truck dad die in '86 and they never got over it. And then some younger folks decided that pushing back against that was going to be their entire personality. And no one's moved on since, even though we all should have, a long time ago.

Eh, the death of Optimus Prime is pretty much ingrained into the DNA of the franchise at this point. It's the defining moment of the biggest piece of G1 media, and arguably the biggest piece of pre-live action media, period. It will never not be relevant, especially given how it's continually referenced, homaged, imitated and repeated, ad nauseam. We're literally posting in a thread dedicated to a year long marketing campaign centered around it!

Could people be a little less weird about it? Sure. But you find people who take things way too seriously in everything, it's just human nature. See every single time a group of sports fans throws a happy little riot when their team wins the big game.

I still remember when it seemed like they were trying to minimize him across the franchise. Rodimus Convoy from Super Link couldn't be Rodimus Prime in Energon. Everyone was a Prime in Animated, but they couldn't allow it for Rodimus for some reason. They let Shockwave be a Prime before Rodimus. Think about that.

Rodimus Prime is a favorite character of mine going back, so it's been a sore spot that they've thankfully been walking back in more recent years, but I don't want them to regress and go back to trying to lock him away again.

I would love to see the cut Autobot city scenes. It would be great if they could clean up the section between when Optimus Arrives and starts his final fight with Megatron.

That would be nice, especially after they pulled the fan animatics off of YouTube, presumably because of this.

Hm, I wonder if that's why I have such a fondness for new generations of heroes and passing the torch and all that jazz. I think TFTM was my first time experiencing something like that, and that was right about the time I really started getting into Transformers. (I think the Aerialbots started it, but the movie stuff really pulled me in.)

I'm not going to go so fast as to Both Sides it, partly because I'm also weary of the discourse devolving into "now it's fans complaining about fans complaining about fans complaining" and partly because things aren't really even. And that's where I'll leave it, because I am still uninterested in getting too in the weeds on this.

I do wonder what the new material will be. I know I'd like it to be just an explicit tie-in to Dark Awakening or something, or something that suggests Rodimus gets Force Ghost visits and pep talks from Optimus. I'd love for us to get some more Good Dad talk from Cullen while we have him -- if the live-action movies won't commit to being a venue for that, I'll take it here.

I remember being a bit excited about "And Another Thing', thinking it would just be Colfer bringing in some of the redeeming aspects of the Mostly Harmless version that didn't quite end so bleak. I did assume that it'd just play fairly safe with everything, which is on me. So when it didn't and Colfer took some characters in new directions, I just shrugged and went "okay, best to ignore this postscript." Not every belated follow-up is going to be as good and deliver on expectations as King of the Hill, but the disappointment in this one was all my fault, so I'm not going to raise my excitement or dread again.

But whatever it is, I know it'll be undercut a bit by fandom noise, so I'll just continue to be on the fringes here and enjoy the toys and whatnot that come from this.

I don't get it, but I'm willing to be generous with people. Because again, I've watched TFTM with people who had no childhood attachment to Optimus Prime, who had never seen any G1 episodes, who had no idea why they should care about any of these characters, who had no idea what they were getting themselves into, who went in totally blind, and they were stunned by Optimus Prime's death. So maybe it is a bigger deal than we're able to appreciate because we're so used to it.

There is some kind of out-of-body experience of it all when accompanied by good-faith new audiences, to see the shock of 1986 kind of playing out in real time with this kind of distance from/positioning relative to it.

The Animated one was weird because Sentinel Prime was originally Rodimus Prime, but Hasbro didn't like the idea of Rodimus Prime being a jerk, so they used the one other named Prime the franchise had at the time. You'd think they wouldn't be so protective of him if they were so willing to minimize him.

To the point, I don't think they're going to try and lock him away. They're coming out with a new SS '86 Rodimus Prime figure, who will either be a heavy retool of the Kingdom release or an all new mould. Either way, you don't roll out a new $90+ figure for a character you want to memory hole.

I guess I just feel it's worth saying that whatever Hasbro is going to tack on here, it ultimately doesn't matter. The way some people are talking, it's like Hasbro is going to seize the TFWiki servers and burn your DVDs to scrub Rodimus from existence.

Beyond that though, it's all just silly. Just enjoy the franchise in whatever way makes you happy. So much about this fandom seems to hinge on "what if the wrong people like something?" and it's like... who cares? Do you like Rodimus? Do you like the media he's in? That's great! Celebrate that. That's what should matter, how you enjoy the property.

Instead, we get cases like EarthSpark turning him into a traitor. :cautious:
Hot take? This isn't an ES thing, or at least not just an ES thing. People sleep on it, but James Roberts' Rodimus from MtMtE/LL is a huge peen. He...
... changes his name to Rodimus because it sounds like "Nominus," and "Optimus," two Primes, at Swindle's suggestion, ie he got played by the most obvious conman on Cybertron.
... talks about leading a crew on a grand quest to save their people, and it becomes a running gag how little progress they make.
... flies around in a spaceship shaped like his own head yelling "TIL ALL ARE ONE!"
... enables self-destructive and addictive behaviour in Chromedome to further his own personal goals.
... gets demoted to "Co-captain" of his own ship, and has to share the title with Megatron of all people.
... hands out badges with his own face on them for literally anything, is a running gag about how pointless they are.
... in a moment of frank honesty, admitted to Optimus Prime that he was a "chancer."

But he was quirky and British so I guess it was fine?

Of course, there is a level of depth here other than "lol Rodimus bad," but my point is that it's a pretty prominent example of Rodimus being shown in a less than flattering light, and it went over very well with a lot of people.

Does this mean IDW ruined Rodimus? Hardly.

That's the great thing about this franchise. You can enjoy it on your own terms, and enjoy the parts you like. If something comes along you don't like, you can let it pass you by and something else that's more your speed will come along. Permanence has never been a thing with this franchise, and it failed the one time they tried it (Aligned).

But this constant angst over a forty year old movie is just... ugh.
I don't think killing Optimus was the best move in hindsight but it's also a movie that came out before I was born. Who cares what I think, myself included? What's done is done, and it's a fun movie and a fun watch.

Could people be a little less weird about it? Sure. But you find people who take things way too seriously in everything, it's just human nature. See every single time a group of sports fans throws a happy little riot when their team wins the big game.
As a sports fan, I can say that those types of fans who riot when their teams win or lose get a lot of flack. They still act that way, sure, but there's a healthy amount of criticism from others in the same fan space for their behaviour.

And to be clear, people who have made hating on Rodimus for Optimus' death, or who have made pushing back against those folks, their whole personality in the TF fandom, are far less destructive then idiots who burn down a couple of blocks after a win.

Still, it's annoying that 40 years out and we can't have a bit of fun with this movie without someone going "oh they're catering to those people." jfc, who cares? Let it go, enjoy the movie, have a good time.

This mirrors my feelings on the matter pretty heavily. I long hated how Hasbro handled the character for decades. They rushed to bring back Optimus as quickly as they could, swept Rodimus under the rug, and virtually tried to pretend he didn't exist for 30 years. During that time, Rodimus became the new name for Hot Rod for trademark purposes. We saw both Energon and Animated versions of the characters that thematically absolutely were new versions of Rodimus Prime, but weren't allowed to be called that. He got a total of three figures during that time - a G1 reissue, a Titaniums toy, and a Masterpiece figure that got the name Rodimus Prime while stripping away his vehicle mode and changing his accessories and deco to be pure Hot Rod. All while dropping hints here and there about how he's an important character with a ton of potential and destiny, which would never be followed up on. Suffice it to say, it was extremely frustrating.

Having said all that, the Hasbro of the last 10 years is not the same Hasbro of the previous 30, which is why I said I'm not ready to jump to the conclusion that this is just further minimizing him. They're not exactly fully embracing him still, but there's been a ton more Rodimus Prime stuff available in the last 10 years than in the previous 30. On the Hasbro side of things in particular, it's worth noting that he'll be getting a second Commander-class release next year, with the design team (Evan IIRC?) having stated in the last year or two that an SS86 Rodimus would be a new mold. That will be his third new Leader+ class figure in less than a decade, and will be coming within a year after this new movie release.

So yeah, there's a lot of history there that triggers heavy skepticism, but my pitchfork and torches have been stowed for a while now. I'm willing to wait and see what this is before I'll make any conclusions.
