AI don't trust techbros

And people thought nukes were Pandora's Box. In hindsight I think I'd rather have lived with the ever-present threat of nuclear annihilation than what we're in for.

apocalyptic gaslighting.

Yeah, I'd rather fallout than this jive. We wanted Rosies and Mr. Handys... not skynet addicted to social media.

Tonight, once again I was driving myself nuts trying to emulate an old computer but I could not get the damned thing to boot. I had the necessary operating system disks. I had the reference disk. I couldn't find anything obviously wrong with my configuration. I checked forums. I checked reddit. I checked out the 436 page manual (gotta love IBM). I got nowhere.

I asked Gemini and it immediately spat out the perfect step-by-step checklist. Unlike every jerk in tech support forums it didn't start at step 20 and say "Do this." It actually filled in the "If you're not even getting that far then the problem might be" blanks.

This from an AI that tells people to eat glue. I swear, it's like it perks up when it gets questions about its ancestors.

Proof that AI has its uses. It's just that way to many people are using it without considering the consequences, taking things produced by AI as gospel and using it as an excuse to get rid of human workers. Having capitalists decide how AI should be used was a huge mistake.

Sometimes AI can be helpful. The problem is you have to already have some idea about how correct the answer it's giving you is. Otherwise it's also possible for the AI to give you instructions that will reformat your hard drive because it learned data from a forum thread where one user was trolling another.

OK but did it also give you a link to where it got this information, this time? I feel like it's only a matter of time before they remove that feature.

It spat out three links that were all about what to do if you're already past the step I was stuck on. Either the AI is really bad at showing its sources or it extrapolated and was actually right.

At this point I'm leaning toward Google having purposely blocked the regular search results from providing what it knows to be the source of the correct answer, to encourage people to trust the AI mode more. I was looking for the source of a quote, and without me putting in who it was from, the AI correctly identified that person and even gave an accurate interpretation of its meaning, but also could not point me to the source. Which is better than the regular search results could manage, which was a bunch of irrelevant garbage similar to what I'd have expected of the early 2000s Google that could only look for individual words out of context and find random matches.

That sounds like something Google would do. I wouldn't touch their AI if the search engine would just do it's job, and they must know it.

Hey, 2008 called & want's its financial crisis back.

Banks pkging + offloading credit risk is literally what happened before 2008. When lenders can immediately xfer default risk to 3rd parties, it removes their incentive to properly underwrite loans. They get the origination fees but someone else eats the losses.

My god, it's literally one of those "The longer you look, the worse it gets" psychological horror images.

Edit: WHY north identified on the drawing?

I can't pick a favourite bit, but some of them are:
  • Superfluous wall with door in between "powder room" and "master roksn"(?)
  • Bedroom 2, which is all cupboards and no bed.
  • Bedroom 4, which is a small bathroom with one sink.
  • "Coat bath" which has two toilets and no bath.
Also no clue what's happening at the bottom of the image.

The 'Master Room' is just the porch, which, well, with there being no way to actually get into the house without breaking a window, makes sense, I guess. Also I find their gourmet kitchen to be a bit lackluster. I don't even see an oven.... Really goes to show that generative AI doesn't actually understand what it generates.

If you're a PC enthusiast, whether it be as a gamer, a creator, a hobbyist, etc, Micron's shutdown of their consumer brand "Crucial" is huge news right now. However, it's not getting the coverage it deserves, because practically everything needs memory these days, and thus it will essentially affect everyone.

As has been covered by the likes of Gamers Nexus (and others), the prices of DRAM (particularly DDR5, but DDR4 has also been affected) have as much as quadrupled in some cases over the past 120 days, and now SSDs are starting to climb in price as well. Basically, now is one of the worst times to build or upgrade a PC, because companies have decided that the real profit-potential lies in supplying the likes of AI data-centers.

More of the looming "you'll own nothing and be happy" dystopia.
