So, Age Verification Services. While there is some bipartisan support for these things, the GOP has been speed-running the adoption of age verification laws in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.

Today, Ohio joined that list when it's age-verification law kicked in. When I was asked to verify my age for BlueSky (the Twitter/X "replacement" social networking ap) this afternoon, I said "nope" and signed up for NordVPN.

I'm aware. It's also what I tell people who want to leave the US to avoid what's happening. I don't fault them if they can leave, but authoritarians have gained inroads in a lot of places, and as climate change continues to hit harder, we're likely to see more and more authoritarianism pop up in more and more places, and eventually there won't be any safe places left.

There's not much I can do about that. What I can do is bypass the issue today.

You might want to look into other VPN services too at some point.. NordVPN for all it's advertised isn't great for anything but making your traffic look like it comes from somewhere else. Mullvad VPN is one I've seen recommended if you want something more secure and anonymized, but I have also heard that some sites do block IPs associated with it because bad actors also love that sort of thing.

To put it more simply, Mullvad has proven in legal court they do not log anything that goes through their service. NordVPN does log. Keep that in mind and put it against your own personal threat model when choosing among these or other VPN providers. (And if you feel the need to go deeper, make sure you don't leak DNS requests or other traffic outside the VPN!)
