Your favourite same-character recolours

So, same-character recolours (or Champion Edition recolours, if you like cultural references to old fighting games), which ones do you like?

1.) I've always had a soft spot for the Jungle Planet version of Optimus Primal. (Yes, I know it's technically an Optimus Primal who isn't from the BW universe. Let's not make the rules too restrictive here.) I have just always liked the Donkey Kong vibes of the brown and tan. I'd have bought a version of Kingdom Optimus Primal if they'd released it in this deco, or as close as. Even if I had to get it in a four-pack of recolours I didn't want. Yes.

2.) eHobby black G1 Starscream! Which IIRC is supposedly meant to resemble Machine Wars Starscream, although the colours don't actually match that figure. Just think Starscream looks pretty regal, yet tastefully muted here. The grey and the black and gold also bring to mind the colour scheme given to Megatron in the early issues of the Marvel UK comic, most likely coincidentally. Jet mode is a better disguise than Starscream's regular deco too, being more starkly militaristic.

Love both of those, and the Megatron that goes with that Primal (or Prime, iirc, in Cybertron). I love a redeco I can more feasibly/comfortably repurpose, since most of the time I'm going to change up the names anyway.

Currently, one that comes to mind is DOTM Nascar Sideswipe.


There's also Sharkticon Megatron from Beast Hunters, and the entire Dark Energon capsule.


If they count, lazy evil redecos are also nice, and can sometimes be surprising and/or less lazy.

His bio describes this as a body he took on after having his Machine Wars body, so it's a "post-Machine Wars" Starscream (the only fiction ever to entertain the idea of a Machine Wars sequel setting).

Still can't quite bring myself to get the Legacy one unless I find one cheap enough to be worth tanking (heh) the resale value with a repaint.

People complained about all the repaints back then, but they were pretty great. Energon Ultra Magnus is still the best Magnus in my collection.

That era had the best repaints because they were generally entirely new color schemes. Even the homages to G1 put their own spin on things

Armada Optimus to Powerlinx Optimus is pretty cool.

Bought Armada Optimus for $25 back in the day at ToysRUs, (insert old man joke here), had a little bit of a hard time choosing between the "classic" color scheme and the Powerlinx one.

I don’t dislike the toy powerlinx colors but a toy with the cartoon navy blue and slate blue would be beautiful. The takara giftset version is close but not quite there.

i’d prefer the red faceplate though

Really wish that the show didn't do such a late-hour advertisement for the toy by waiting until the very end of the second-to-last episode for Optimus to acquire that color scheme.

Same with the Dreamwave comic waiting until the second-to-last Armada chapter before not only upgrading both Optimus and Jetfire but also having them not combine for the first time until that same moment.

...I kid. Kinda. In that it's a neat toy, but sad if nothing Hasbro has done since has topped it, at least as an Ultra Magnus goes. But I admit, I wanted one myself, despite already owning Overload. Still kinda do.

Anyway, I guess for my picks, I'd have to consider Powerlinx Optimus Prime and Powerlinx Hot Shot from Armada, and this guy:

Also this version of Grimlock.

I had him for a hot minute back in the day, but a combination of getting to the age where society was trying to hammer into my head that I was too old for toys and not having a job yet, I wound up having second thoughts about the purchase and wound up returning him.

I carry a bit of guilt/regret/sadness over that.

Black Zarak is a neat one.

Always been a fan of Nucleon Quest Super Convoy. And Fire Guts God Ginrai.

And it's late, so I'm leaving it there for right now.

I had that Magnus, along with Final Battle Optimus and Powerlinx Jetfire. When my wife and I moved from California back to Michigan, I decided to reduce how much we had to move and gave the set of them to a kid in our apartment complex. Overall, I'm still happy with that decision, but I have to admit I kinda wish I still had Magnus.
