I have not seen one episode
You're missing out on some great Beast Wars-levels of characterization and some top-notch, all-star (and at times heartwarming) voice acting.

Kade and Heatwave have a real "Rattrap and Dinobot" vibe going on with their relationship, for instance.

And Chief Burns is the best father character in all Transformers media.

And Blades is the best Fluttershy since Fluttershy.

Where do the side tanks go in robot mode? Might have helped if they were more vertical. Maybe folding in half for where they go in robot mode.
they fold and hide away inside his legs, with the rear bed of the truck being the back of the legs and, well, hiding them

of course the problem is...they're also one of the ways the vehicle mode actually tabs together

That does help. It also has the side effect of making the gray thighs stand out more, but at least the eye is guided along the continuous red form, from front to back.

From most angles, tbh, the gray thighs come across as a base for the ladder, so it looks passable to me.

Yeah, I think the arms tuck into the cab.

Aye.

As noted, they fold into the legs. More specifically, the truck bed opens up in halves, and they rotate in/out on a ball joint.

For a point of comparison, here's the original:

And the later simplified budget version:

(Yes, I have both. And Chase in both scales, plus Legacy/AotP. Sadly, I only have the simpler Boulder, and sadder still, no Blades. 😿 )

And the original cartoon model for further comparison (via Pinterest).

Vortex is very… adequate. There’s nothing wrong with him, he’s got the standard articulation, looks the part and gets the job done but separating the combiner engineering from him leads to a very generic, unimpressive robot and heli. He even mostly transforms like a CW figure with the slight change of the arms being formed by the tail. It’s a simple, effective, somewhat overly familiar by the point transformation that leads to a relatively kibble-free robot. The helicopter tail has jointing to distance from the forearms but they end up just hanging off the bottom of the arms. Not a fan. The blue on gunmetal colorscheme is beautiful and the shade of dark gray they chose does a great job of not lookingnplasticky. Of note, I forgot to put on his two tiny guns.

Crasher really is old news. Good deco, decent var mode but the transformation feels terrible. The front wheel assemblies are really hard to turn and either pop off or take an uncomfortable amount of force to move. Tolerances are a bit suspect overall, with the halves of the racecar front refusing to stay together. Robot mode has the standard suite of articulation and has a standout deco. Well, for a decepticon. She’d fit right in with the Autobot 84 lineup lol.

If I'm being honest, the static shoulder pylons ruin it for me.

Legacy Armada Megatron got multiple upgrade kits to fix that problem for that mold, but no such kits were made for this mold's shoulders.
