It all starts to make sense after watching this, which popped up in my recommendations...

Wow. You just talk about taking all the wrong lessons from what the other guys are doing...
There was no “hidden truth” about MASK, and the clickbaity title and thumbnail don’t do much to improve my opinion of the video as a whole. It was a half ass wiki run with uncredited sources for where the “Kenner dissatisfaction” came from. The analysis, laden with inaccuracies and almost conspiratorial extrapolation, is contextualized through a modern (and Australian?) lense, which doesn’t reflect the context and era from which this franchise originated.

Kenner made MASK in response to the success of GI Joe and the interest toy companies had in transforming toys from Japan. They designed the general concept and toys and sent it DiC for 65 episodes. MASK was just one of over half a dozen projects DiC was cranking out between 1984-1986. One of a dozen “toy franchises” launched in the mid-80s after Mattel and Hasbro paved the way.
The military overtones were a product of the times, as was the casual stereotyping. That doesn’t “excuse it” or “make it right”, but it’s the equivalent of pearl clutching over the minstrels in Dumbo at this point.

And the voice actors? Voice acting, ESPECIALLY in the 80s, paid jive. That’s why established VAs worked on half a dozen shows, and you’d have actors worK on both bit TV parts AND animation. Doug Stone worked in anime, he took the jobs that paid the bills. Even if the work was a bit unsavory, be it super violent or adult.

At the end of the day, MASK managed four years of product. He-Man managed 6. The Real Ghostbusters got around 5, while Thundercats (with double the episode count) barely eked 3 years. By the standards of the time, MASK was a successful brand that had run its course.

I’m sorry, but this video (and the maker’s comments), to me, showed a relative indifference to the inaccuracies, and it was cranked out as clickbait as he could for the easy views.

My bad. I've never been real deep into M.A.S.K. outside of owning a few early toys and digging the theme song, so I didn't realize it was that far off the mark.

Is that Click-Baity thumbnail A.I. generated?

I have NO intention on watching that 'video'.

Ew. I didn't even notice that. I thought it was just fan art plastered on there. (FWIW, it was a lot smaller on my TV...)

Sigh, there really is no escaping that crap now.

Would anyone mind if I deleted that embed from the face of this forum? Or would you rather I just live with the shame?

Yeah, once it got the the VA stuff, it really annoyed me.

This is likely a better video:

Oh yeah, I saw this when it first aired! I love Secret Galaxy, though I'm still trying to catch up on recent stuff. I wish I had the time to dedicate to his Patreon-exclusive archive.

That reminds me, Dan hasn't done a toy video in a while, has he?

MASK is starting to arrive in the US. Prior to SDCC, The Loyal Subjects are starting up press coverage, with Toy Shiz and Pop Culture Collectibles both hosting unboxing videos of the brand new, overhauled, MASK line. The packaging and inserts are very blatantly designed for collector sensibilities, with full “blister style” package inserts, allowing for easy “repackaging”.
Pop Culture Collectibles and any TLS coverage are on social media I’m not tied into, but Toy Shiz did post a YouTube video featuring the Switchblade, Condor and Rhino:

And, OH the comments….Proof you can never make fans happy and most fans don’t know nearly as much as they THINK they do.

That said, I will wait for more remarks about the line as it gets into people’s hands. It’s not clear if these were “off the line” or final test releases. I’m seeing issues/concerns with some mechanical features (the Rhino’s exhaust pipes, mechanics in the Switchblade), but it’s hard to relate that to “it’s an issue with QC” versus “the old toys were always like this” since I had so few back in the day (and certainly not any from Series 1).

I’m also hesitant to buy into a line like this without some measure of continuing support, which we’ll probably find out about at SDCC on July 24.

The channels' other videos share the same type of thumbnail: BOOBS, and the videos (what few I've seen) are the same low-effort crap.

I would remove the video to deny the video/channel/creator any traffic, attention, or metrics, as little as it would be from our humble little corner of the 'net.

Haven't watched any of their other stuff. Sounds like something to avoid.

I'll gladly do so, if others will trust that I can live with my shame without having it there. XD

Few things from SDCC-
First off, Hasbro was gracious enough to grant TLS some space at their breakfast event to have ol’ John Warden come by and show off stuff from Jem, My Pet Monster, and MASK. It’s nice to see that Hasbro, at some level, is offering some support to their licensees when it’s coming to legacy brands.

Second, TLS’s own web store has sold out of the Thunderhawk and complete wave 1 set, and even the SDCC showcase from TLS is indicating the Thunderhawk being sold out (Are they selling MASK at the show?). BBTS still has preorders, so it might simply apply to TLS’s own supply, not that of BBTS or other retailers.

And about the time I’m posting this, Loyal Subjects should be hosting their panel for SDCC, which promises a number of new reveals for MASK. I’ll post/update when that information gets disseminated across the internet.

Panel Update: First off, it was confirmed that TLS is operating under Hasbro’s trademark restrictions, meaning they’ve lost the ability to call the villainous group “VENOM”. Second, Wave 2 was given a sneak preview, showcasing the Jackhammer and 1986’s Hurricane. In addition, more of the black and gold 40th Anniversary decos are coming, due for preorder on 8/5, covering the entire first wave (presumably, with additional stock of the black and gold Rhino on deck as well).

Panel images, as detailed above

Given the premium pricing on the RHINO, I‘m probably not game for any. Though, if the Condor isn’t too egregiously priced, I think that might make a more interesting addition to the slate.

Not quite sure I understand how that works. Is Hasbro just not letting them use it? Is it because Hasbro doesn't have it, and they can't apply to get it? Something else?

No one has been clear on this, from what I can find. My presumption is that, because Hasbro owns the IP and marks, TLS can only use marks Hasbro has access to. And because Hasbro is the holder for the IP, TLS can’t “bypass them” to try and get trademarks.

So, Hasbro doesn’t have access (for whatever reason) to the name “VENOM”, TLS can’t use the name on packaging or stickers related to their line. Though, I’m a touch confused on that since, in MASK, VENOM was an acronym, not a full name, so I’m not sure how that might change how the mark is registered. I’m sure a big reason they can’t use “venom” is because of the Marvel Spider-Man villain, but I’m not sure acronyms work in that regard.

I’m still bemused on some of that, simply on basis that the line still seems to be “beholden” to mass retail restrictions (the 8+ age rating, the multilingual packaging, the trademark compromises) when the nature and pricing of the line largely restrict it to a specialty market where some of these concerns seems far less valid.

It was joked about finding a new name for MASK’s antagonists, and one hit me the other night (a legacy name use from Kenner’s MegaForce):
VROC- Villainous Regime Opposing Command
I know they were, ostensively, the “good guys” in the MegaForce line (by virtue of the TRIAX sporting more Soviet derived designs and colors), but I think it would be a fun nod to Kenner’s legacy.
(Update: Came up with something that might work with TRIAX- Tyrannical Renagade Intra Armored eXperts)

Guess we’ll be waiting for the Fall Con season to learn about the rest of wave 2. My bets (barring something all new like the Shark) would be the Gator and Piranha. Not only would it help “check off” (as much as I loathe that being a primary driver for item selection) a couple key Series 1 vehicles, but they would be nicely complimentary to each other. Assuming that “toy marketing” idea is even a relevant concern. Some are still expecting a Boulder Hill, but from the half assed research I’ve done, that looks to be more of a $250-300 release given the likelihood of improvements TLS can make and how the line is being presented (with easy repacking). I don’t see that as being pragmatic in the first year of the line, and it’ll probably be a “crowd funding” type situation.

I think it will be interesting to see how frequent TLS can support MASK. I’m assuming we’ll reach a point where some waves will have just one or no Venom representation by simple virtue of how many more items the MASK team got during the original line’s run. Right now, I’m leaning towards wave 2 being a “spring 2026” slate, with another batch in late summer for “Fall 2026”. I’m calling wave 3 to be the Outlaw, Raven, Stinger, and Firefly. For S&Gs, Wave 4 to be Meteor, Manta, and Firecracker.
