First previews of McFarlane’s slate of Superman 25 products. Multiverse Superman and Metamorpho, a Posed 1/6 figure, and a bunch of Super Powers stuff.

That Superman is tempting if only because I love that suit.

"Holy twisted nipples, Batman!"

"..."

"...look at the fourth one."

"Ah, I see. We're going to have to have a long discussion when we get back to the Batcave, old chum."

"Is it about why Aunt Harriet came to live with us?"

"...it might be."

I've mostly let the McFarlane era pass me right by, despite liking some of the designs and being very impressed at the breadth of Batmen the line's coverage. This is largely (heh) due to how the 7" scale feels so unwieldy to me (this may be magnified by the packaging, but I've seen these on display loose and they still tower over what I'm used to). It's kind of frustrating because I've never EVER seen this amount of stuff I'd want checked off the list. The glorious range of 90s stuff (all the Azbats looks, more or less, and the Reign of the Supermen lineup), all the movie Batmen... and all looking much better than Mattel's old bucks. But I just can't talk myself into it.

The only thing I've gotten is the Arkham Knight Batman (and I might go back and get the animated Batman Beyond rerelease), since it was more or less in similar scale with the old DC Direct releases anyway. But what I REALLY wanted them to get around to was the Arkham Knight game's Batman Beyond costume (which hasn't really gotten a mainline toy -- there's a 1:18 assembly figure, a Sideshow statue, a Hot Toys figure, etc but that's it).

Alas, I don't think it's in their pipeline of last releases before Mattel officially starts up again.

I'll say this... Mattel killed my love of DC collecting. I was hesitant to go in on McFarlane at first because of the scale. Specifically that it's not compatible with Hasbro's Marvel six inch Legends.

But after taking the dive... man, it's good stuff. It re-ignited my love of DC figures. Not just the breadth of designs, but the quality. I know McFarlane's "deal" isn't for everyone, but for me? The detail, quality, and price value is top notch.

Just as an example... cloth goods wired capes. For the longest while this was the purview of high end import lines like Mafex or Revoltech, figures that run $90-$120 USD (and tariffs aren't gonna make that go down easier). McFarlane now treats them like the standard, though, and pulls them off pretty seamlessly (hehe) at mass retail. Meanwhile Marvel Legends still uses stiff plastic capes at essentially the same price point.

I think now that McFarlane is losing the licence, it might be worth checking out? I have no idea how the aftermarket will treat McFarlane stuff once it's no longer current, but if prices go down... give it a deeper look. I think you'll like it.

Speaking of Mattel...
As I said Mattel's last DC run killed my love DC collecting. That being said, 2019 was a bad year of Mattel. They've since shown significant improvement in their Jurassic Park, WWE, and MotU line so I'm willing to give DC Mattel II a fair shot.

But either way I'm content with my DC McFarlane stuff, even if it exists in a scale unto itself (and Spawn figures too I guess 😛).

I was burning out with Mattel too, and even specialty stores started having trouble bringing stuff in toward the end. I just lost interest in it.

I like the look of a lot of the McFarlanr stuff, except some of the faces. And as I mentioned it's practically an instant collection because they've done the ones I'd be looking for (well, almost all). And the secondary market prices here aren't terrible. But the thing that's the real hurdle is the size, which will take some getting used to.

Relatedly, I should be cutting down on toylines anyway. I'm rebooting and streamlining my wrestling collection, just wrapped my Power Rangers stuff more or less with Lightning Collection ending for now, and I'm considering just keeping DC to an absolute minimum (I'm still trying to look for a good deal on the Mafex Knightfall Batman, who may have passed me by.)

I am intrigued by what Mattel's next take might be. Getting away from those old DCUC bucks will be essential to refreshing the line's look.
