Yeah, but they'll also be without someone who can give them orders. They can love and worship him all they ******* well want: he won't be able to direct them when he's dead.

This is long, but essential viewing.

Ezra Klein: "I want to say something because it's very important I say this. This is the Biden Administration's process for its own bill. They wanted this to happen. This is how liberal government works now."
Jon Stewart: "This is something they instituted for this bill."
Ezra Klein: "For their bill."
Jon Stewart: "They wanted this."
Ezra Klein: "It's so important to say this. This is not how Republicans handicapped a liberal bill. This is a bill passed by Democrats with a regulatory structure written by a Democratic administration."

The knowledge that without California's Electoral College votes Democrats would never win a Presidential election again?

Okay... so what does california care? 5th biggest economy in the world, and the US crashes even harder without them. What incentive do they have to stay?

So there's every reason for Trump to try to kick them out? We really shouldn't be giving Trump any ideas.

A better question is how could Newsom get away with this without leaving the union first? Overriding federal taxes is one thing I know for sure states are not allowed to do and never have been.

I'm betting this is just a publicity stunt to garner support for a 2028 presidential run. And it's not a bad one, really. I've been saying ever since 2017 that Trump benefited hugely from being constantly in the news during the Obama years, even before he announced he was running, and that the smartest thing a Democrat wanting to run against him could do was spend his entire administration building a reputation as one of his toughest critics. Too many times we get a slate of candidates that nobody outside of their constituency has even heard of, and have no reason to vote for except their party affiliation—which only matters after the primaries anyway.

Democrats need more than just a critic. The 2028 message can't just be "Trump broke it, but I'll fix it the way it was." There has to be a message to people who viewed things as already broken.

A major mistake Democrats made in 2024 was the messaging of "Inflation is actually down, you know." It was true, but if someone already couldn't afford groceries, it wasn't a consolation to hear that prices are still going up but not by as much. It sounded too much like "We're not even going to try to fix it. It's already fixed."

I give Kamala some credit for correctly pointing out corporate price gouging, but then the donors freaked out and she went quiet.

Well yeah, I can't think of a single active politician in this country who I'd trust to actually fix everything Trump broke, let alone make things better than they were before. I don't honestly think a Constitutionally-limited president, even with the backing of a Congressional majority, can pull that off at this point. Considering most of the stuff he's doing, he's having to flagrantly disregard the Constitution to do in the first place.

But if the goal is to just get elected, Newsom is on the rightest track anyone in his party has been on in since Obama at least.

I don't trust Newsom, but he's better than Trump. Frankly Trump, is only able to impose tariffs because CONGRESS delegated that power to the office of the President. They can just as easily strip it away, if they weren't so scared of being primaried(and frankly, given the approval ratings that Trump is getting due to the tariffs, they shouldn't be so scared at this point)..

More accurately, he's declared "national emergencies" and is relying on the powers granted under that status to push the tariffs. But Congress can end that I believe, so ball's still in their court, just for slightly different reasons.
