There are a lot of ways to be President as long as you know which way you are doing it and know where to get the pieces you are missing. I know really very little about President Eisenhower, but what he needed to accomplish in the White House was VERY different from what he needed to accomplish in WW2. At the same time, you don't get as high in the army as he did without some political skill. But you can get that high without understanding much about domestic policy or even statecraft. When he was moving troops around, FDR and Truman were talking to the other heads of state. He had great name recognition. It's fine as long as he knew where to find helpers. You can be President by running an organization of specialists and then it is a lot like being a general. And I'm fine with presidents whom have actual military service (preferably in which they were honorably discharged.) because it means they understand and can live with the requirements of an oath of service, work in a highly rigid bureaucratic structure and understand the nature of sacrifice.
Obama could make a speech (don't know if he wrote any), write a book (I think he wrote them), win a debate, and get elected. It is difficult to get a look under the hood because the White House organization is always designed to look as much as possible like the President is running the show. But the reason his speeches and debates went so well was because he is very smart and understood the issues. He didn't have to nail a soundbyte. If you asked him a question, he knew the answer.Well, yeah. You literally cannot do the entire job of "head of state" (in general, not referring to just the US.) without understanding that it's not a one man job. You need experts, advocates and underlings to actually do stuff. Part of it is a robust understanding of self to know where you as an individual is lacking and then getting the people needed to round out the experience.
Clooney said the Biden at the fundraiser he organized a few weeks earlier was the same Biden from the debate.
The Biden campaign replied Joe has more stamina than Clooney.
"George Clooney, not everyone's favorite actor (remember Batman & Robin? killed the franchise for a decade.) Frankly, I did him a favor attending his event. I was there longer than Low Energy George; he left his own fundraiser before me! Can you imagine? And as thanks he attacks me, your favorite president, in the Failing New York Times."
Okay. I was really thinking we should stay the course, but if George Clooney says...
He's not out. He knows just as well as the rest of us what will happen if trump gets in again. He's just making sure the party knows that the money isn't happy. He's not just chiming in as an actor. He's chiming in as one of the party's biggest fundraisers. If he's out, his whole donor network might be out.

Hopefully this'll just end up as more fuel for the comedy networks and nothing else, given how Onion-esque it was.
