UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Assuming it results in a majority government that's in favor of rejoining the EU (probably as a full member because I doubt they'd take them back under any other terms), "Dependence Day" might be more apt.

Just general incompetence, really. Not that different to the bad optics that plagued Theresa May’s general election campaign. All rather last minute too. Seems Sunak called the election without consulting most of his cabinet. He had six months left, so needn’t have called it this early. Safe guess is that worse economic news is to come, and that Sunak thinks he can preserve more Tory seats with an earlier election.

Find it ironic Tory MPs are angry at Sunak for ruining their life plans, when the Tory government have been doing the same thing to the British public for the last 14 years.

Y'all do realize that nato in general is gearing up for a long term, cold war styled dick waving contest with china, right? Even canada is pouring money into its armed services. Because the SIZE of the standing army is more important in this context than the actual, true to life capabilities.

It's also why nato is trying to make a long term, america proof aid package for ukraine.

Edit: so yeah, they probably DO have more useful things to sink that coin into: but no amount of regional currency will matter if china starts WW3.

We do need some level of rearmament. I’d rather we build the existing volunteer professional military rather than forcibly enslave kids for a year as free labour.

Already this morning Tory ministers are trying to downplay the conscription policy (one even saying “no one will go to prison over this” if people refuse), so they realise it won’t be a popular manifesto pledge.

They won't be able to apply it to any meaningful level, and it'll hurt their popularity in the short and long term. If it had been in place since... vietnam, or even afghanistan the first: it would be embedded in society and no one would think about it or really care. But to do it now when it's so obvious that the governments have been dicking soldiers around for generations and the veterans are either ignored or outright abused: no one will want to oblige.

They could have instituted a nationwide community service requirement in schools for secondary and post secondary education, and offered courses that would have made transitioning into the military easier (like running the full route of the scouts in north america.) but politicians are inherently stupid. So here we are. Instead of a long term social path that creates communities and offers an intro to military service: you get another reason to not want to enlist and another reason to hate politicians.

The bill will die and be unpopular and they'll continue to wonder why no one wants to enlist.

Yes X, but what does that mean? If it turns out to be true: how that does that effect things?

Well, the Tories are leaning very hard right at the moment, both on economics and nationalism / culture war rhetoric. They’ll certainly double down on that after the election, particularly if one of their crazies becomes Tory leader. In that case, it’d be preferable if the culturally liberal and not-nationalistic LibDems ended up the largest opposition party over the Tories. Although, honestly, I doubt that the LibDems will overtake the Tories, and I doubt that the size of the Labour majority will be like anything currently predicted by most polls.

For balance, here’s another major poll which is predicting the Tories still in second place, albeit suffering severe losses.

I hope Labour’s entire game plan isn’t “not doing any of the bad Tory stuff”

You have to actively do good things. You can’t merely not do bad ones or people are going to see nothing changes and AT BEST become disengaged and apathetic.

The status quo is threatened the least by a disengaged and apathetic population. So what do you think they're going to do?

Nigel Farage, reporting for duty.

Nigel Farage has announced he will run as Reform UK's candidate in Clacton, after previously saying he would not stand in July’s general election.

The former UKIP and Brexit Party leader said he had changed his mind after spending time on the campaign trail, adding he did not want to let his supporters down.

The Essex seat, which was the first to elect a UKIP MP in 2014, has a Conservative majority of 24,702.

Mr Farage also revealed he was taking over from Richard Tice as Reform's leader for the next five years.
