Movies and TV Where We're Going, We Don't Need... "Roads". Back to the Future Turns 40

Hey, CoffeeHorse got to talk about Jaws, so I called dibs on Back to the Future.

And hey, I can talk about Back to the Future for a while, but I'll keep it brief.

On July 3rd, 1985, the movie hit theaters that was nothing short of generational, and generation-spanning. It was a movie that those growing up in the '80s could relate to through its main character, as well as their parents who'd grown up some 30 years earlier by way of the setting for the majority of the film.

Nothing quite like it had ever been made before, and who knows, may never be made again -- at least, if its creators have any say in it. But on the bright side, we got a musical!

Of course, we also got two sequels, which help round out the story. For real, while people argue over which of the three is the best, the truth is that you're missing out if you're only watching one of the three.

And while we may never get a proper Back to the Future Part IV, there's been no shortage of supplemental material. A two-season animated series, a video game, and even comic books co-written by the film's co-writer, Bob Gale, which help further flesh out the world we see in the movies. Those came from IDW, who also held the Transformers license at the time, meaning that when Hasbro created a Collaborative figure, well...

Yeah, we got a figure with actual lore, baby! (Actually, Ghostbusters got that, too. Sweet.)

Also worth noting is how at the time, there was virtually no Back to the Future merchandise. But now? You're spoiled for choice at places like our sponsor, Big Bad Toy Store. 1985 was great, sure, but the future has its perks as well.

Oh, and one other thing...
