I don't know if it's Collaborative or just cross merchandising, but I find it fascinating that with the fruit snacks, the cereal, and the perfume of all things, you can not only know what your favorite character turns into, but also what they might taste and smell like, too.

At what point did the fandom change from 'uncommonly dedicated' to 'disturbingly obsessed'?

The point when corporations started seeing out money as blood in the water.

To be fair, Transformers are hardly alone in this area....

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

When the spread sheet had to start using new colours to indicate how much money they made: it moved from dedicated to obsessed.

Suffering from success, really.

I had no idea perfume was a common merchandise item. My guess is burnt out electronics after the battle, but I can't see that selling...what did James Bond fragrance come out as? That apparently was a thing and I don't think double martinis are a fragrance either.

Came across Doronjo themed perfume a few years ago so that's when I found out.

I know the anime fandom has had far weirder merchandising for years, but I think it was the Transformers perfume that made me stop and question things.
They missed a trick by not releasing one that smells like the greatest Transformers merchandise of all...

Fair, but I was even thinking of all the different franchises that have done perfume... it's really quite ubiquitous.
My favourite is still the Star Trek cologne.
