After a lengthy delay, due in part to the whole Diamond hoopla, Astrobots volume 2 #1 is finally out today!
And, yeah, this is just a continuation. If you checked out the first volume and liked it, I think you'll find stuff to like in this. If you never checked it out, I might recommend checking out that first volume, if only for the art. You probably could jump onboard with this issue, but you'd miss out on the context. They try to catch you up with two recap pages in the beginning of the book, but that's kind of a dry way to experience it.
The artwork continues to be pretty top tier. I DO enjoy this artwork and some of these robot designs. This is a fun book just to look at.
Writing wise? It's Furman, so it's solid, but this issue in particular doesn't really "wow" me. It's mostly action, which again, it's fun to look at. And I continue to like the overall premise of the franchise. But, the writing doesn't really get a chance to do anything all that memorable, yet. So, writing-wise, this is solid and workman-like, to me. We get a couple of fights and then a last page cliffhanger. Pretty routine stuff, really. (Furman does sneak a "More than meets the eye" reference in there, though.)
There's also a little toy gallery in the back of the book, showing you a bunch of the Astrobots toys and recolors, if you're interested in that side of things. It's kind of neat.
So, I, personally, like this. I'm not going to say it's better than the Skybound Transformers comics. Those are probably the better written book overall (and it's cheaper, since this Astrobots issue is $5.) But, I do enjoy having a "competitor" of sorts to Transformers out. I like giant robots. So, I welcome more giant robot comics into my life.
If you just want some cool giant robot art, you could do worse than this comic. I think it's worth at least checking out the trade paperback for the first volume, if you're interested.
This is all just to let you know, Astrobots still live!
