I always found Smokescreen's rearrangement of the traditional Smokescreen colors looks better than the G1's somewhat simple color scheme with loud, bright colors. Yeah, he's a race car but still it's not my favorite colorscheme. Smokescreen being a pretty cool character on the Prime too. AOTP made a new take on him, so I decided to pick him up. He's okay I guess.
Robot mode's got a good set of proportions despite the somewhat stubby forearms. Prime tended towards the heroic proportions, so we get wide shoulders, narrow waist and somewhat bellbottom legs. Colors are predominantly a bright white with some bright blue and red, with silver and dark gray parts thrown in. It overall works well and breaks up the bland white well enough. Of note is he has his signature phase shifter thing sculpted and painted onto his left wrist. I like the robot mode but he always looks like his hood should push down lower to my eyes, partially because of how his head sits kind of low and has zero neck. The cutout on the bumper that looks like it should frame the insignia doesn't help. Anyway, Robot mode has the standard suite of articulation but with the omission of wrist rotation. His knees, while in theory, have the standard 90 degree bend, have some strange design choices put into them. There are slots on his thighs that correspond to tabs on the inside of his kneepads. You'd think this would be to secure them in car mode but no, they could only possibly come into contact in robot mode. This is coupled with hard detents on the knees where they click firmly into place. This means that his knees are either straight as an arrow or bent. Not usually a problem but it makes standing poses somewhat awkward. I cut off the tabs and shaved off the large tabs on the interior knee parts and it has no effect on either mode and the knees are pure friction now. Another slight annoyance is that the clamshell shins don't stay shut very well but it's not a common problem with usual handling. It was only really a problem with the stiff knee detents out of the box. After shaving the tab down, it doesn't really happen any more. Annoyingly, his doorwings do not lock into place and are subject to being jostled and misaligned. The doors will prove to be a source of irritation later on too.
Smokescreen comes with two barrels that you can stick onto his forearms by flipping his wrists in as in vehicle mode and pegging them in the wrist ports. They're painted a nice silver but are somewhat unimpressive. I get this impression with most of the Prime integrated weapons, aside from Optimus and Bulkhead who had big meaty weapons. They peg into ports on the back of the door wings if you're not using them.
Transformation is standard carformer fare, with the only difference that Smokescreen does the hood chest and the bumper chest at the same time. His legs transform using a CW-style collapsing legs which the tabs and locks seen in robot mode do not factor in at all. Only real point of annoyance is the doorwings which never really seem to slot into place very well and I usually either feel some resistance or they pop out immediately. Not sure why this happens.
Altmode is a sleek, low to the ground sportscar. It looks really nice and has all of the main details painted in. Now, I forgot to take photos before I started modification, so note that out of the box, the rear window and the tire rims aren't painted. Missing major detail is just the rear lights, really. The car mode looks alright, with no egregious hinges or robot parts but the front wheels don't roll very well for whatever reason. The gun barrels can peg onto the rear bumper for storage and look like very large exhausts. Not terrible storage. There's another port on the roof if you want to give him additional weapons. It's a car, these don't do much but roll.
Overall, Smokescreen's a pretty good carformer with some slight annoyances. If you like the look or the character, I think he's a solid release, mostly worth full price. Some minor tolerance issues but nothing game-breaking. Of course, we know he has an impending Beast Hunters colors incoming at some point but I think the original colors looks good, if a bit samey with the red and white Autobot cars. I'd definitely bite if Hasbro can sort out the yellow paint on blue plastics. Overall, Smokescreen won't disappoint but also won't surprise.
