Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, and rainbows have nothing to hide...

May I present...the Rainbow Collection!

Boom is collecting the old IDW run in fancy hardcover versions. I don't think they've said if it's the ENTIRE run, miniseries and everything, or just the main run. But, they've got a kickstarter up now, if you want to donate to get them.

I've already got all these books, so I'm probably not going to double-dip. But, if you've never dipped your toe into IDW's G4 run, this might be a good way to check them out.

Just doing the main series would leave out a lot of stuff that's meant to be read before certain arcs. But we'll see. Considering their Marvel Transformers collection actually presented the UK stories in their proper places instead of all punted off to the side in a separate collection, there's a very reasonable chance Boom will include everything here.

They have every reason to want to get this right. It's easy to forget or take it for granted now, but this comic was a legit sales phenomenon in its early years.

According to the campaign page, the hardcovers will be "6.625" x 10.1875". That is SMALLER than a normal comic, to say nothing about smaller than a hardcover collection.

I mean, glad it's not "OVERSIZED" editions (harder to fit on a shelf, let alone read.

Each Hardcover volume is listed to include 4-5 Volumes of "Friendship is Magic" (probably the collected TPBs) and apparently, what's NOT included is "Fiendship is Magic", "Equestria Girls", "Deviations" and the FCBD 2020 edition. Why? And no mention of "Friends Forever" and all the other miniseries and one-shots. There were a LOT.

Was hoping for something like IDW's Transformers collections where everything is in "Recommended Reading Order" (they tried).

Undersized, stuff excluded, unclear inclusions, and obvious lack of effort and/or passion makes this a pass. And it's already funded!

Yeah, I was kind of worried about that.

There's a LOT of IDW Pony comics to reprint. But, most of it's pretty episodic, so you can get away with skipping over parts, mostly. But, there are stuff like the Cloud Gremlins that make their first appearance in a Micro-Series issue, and then cameo quite often in other books for the rest of the run. You kind of miss out on stuff like that, if you don't include some of the spinoff books. It's mostly smaller things, and self-references, but it does add up the longer the books go on.

But, I do understand wanting to focus on the main ongoing. Because if you include EVERYTHING, you go from around 100 issues, to probably...200 pretty easily.

But, it isn't ideal. And I definitely agree with not wanting to pay a premium price for something that isn't quite up to standards. But, maybe they can change things with a little fan feedback? Who knows?

It's amazing how companies can have every reason to want to get something right and then they just don't.

I *don't* understand just focusing on the ongoing. It has real holes in it without the spinoff books. It's not just references, but whole story setups. Excluding the spinoffs, or punting them into a separate collection later on if that happens, is neither a good way to present the stories nor is it accurate to how we experienced this comic at the time. It is just laziness, which is reckless for a company looking to make a first impression.

Yes, collecting everything in recommended reading order would be a lot of volumes. They're a comic book company! Getting readers on the hook for multiple volumes is literally their entire business model. What are they doing?

We FINALLY got a little teaser about the new comics from Boom.

...And it's...a little unexpected.

They haven't said much about this. But, from these initial images...it seems like the Boom comics will feature a brand-new cast created SPECIFICALLY for the comics! Not tying into the new show at all!

It's a very G4 inspired art style, too. So, this could be set somewhere in G4 Equestria, or maybe it's just completely it's own thing, just inspired by G4's artstyle. We really don't know, yet.

And if this is the case...I'm actually all for it! Trying to work around the "main" media has always been one of the bigger hurdles with the comics. Doing a totally unique story with totally new characters actually fixes all of that. It opens up a lot of possibilities for the comic, that I'm kind of excited about.

And the Pumpkin-Carving pony looks like she could have a...interesting personality. Given her "blood splattered" pillow. Seems like a horror-movie-fan or something. This could get fun.

Also...Amy Mebberson will be doing the art, at least at first. Y'know, the artist behind the G5 Set Your Sail miniseries? Yeah...that's some GOOD news! There's probably going to be other artists on the book for later arcs, because I don't think she's a super-fast artist. But, having her as the "main" artist on the book is just GREAT news.

Seanan McGuire is the writer. And I'm less familiar with her work. But, she's written some Spider-Gwen comics. And I've heard good things about her Wayward Children series of books. And she's actually won some Hugo awards for some of her prose work, so sounds like she's pretty solid!

Although, in the comments, they point out that Amy Mebberson has already said that the comic will actually be a G4 continuation, featuring Twilight just after she got her wings. So, these new ponies might just be some of Amy's fanart that Seanan posted online. These guys might not be in the comic, at all. But, we'll just have to wait and see. If these guys are just from fanart, I don't think they ever got posted to Derpibooru. Because cross-referencing "Artist: Amy Mebberson" with "OC" doesn't bring them up. A new cast would definitely be my preference, at this point, but we'll just have to wait and see for a bit.

The first issue sounds like it's coming out in November, so we should get solicitations next month. I'm kind of interested to get more details about all of this.

So basically we still don't know much other than who's involved. It is frustrating how slowly we're being drip fed anything but at least this is something.

Amy Mebberson doing the art is another reason not to feel too bad for IDW losing the license. Hasbro wants to work with the same people, and that just means Boom now.

Starting from the end of Season 3 is a choice. That makes it sound more like a fork of G4 than a continuation. But comics do love to get messy that way. Also, starting post season 3 with winged Twilight makes this immediately obviously distinct from the little we've seen of G6. So they are not trying the unified media approach of G5. Hasbro wants to push their shiny new thing, but they're letting Boom do their own thing with the cash cow they wanted the license for. Cool. So people who dislike G6 or never give it a chance will have something.

That orange unicorn will have a placeholder name and fan art before the weekend is over. Whether these characters appear in the comic or not, they're keepers. Especially her.

This is a lifelong dream for Seanan McGuire, she credits MLP with helping her get through some rough times in her childhood (Gen1, but still). She's been posting about this a fair amount on her BlueSky account.

I wonder if she'll bring in elements of Velveteen and Indexing, with stories having a life of their own. I mean, I doubt we'll see the horror side of that like in those books (I just finished the second Velveteen collection, and the horror of being part of a Story is pretty prominent there, as it is in her two Indexing books), but the idea of literally fighting the narrative seems like it'd work.

If G1 is a big inspiration for her, leaning into horror is a stronger possibility than you might think.

Seriously people. G1 is a hoot. Give it a shot.

Honestly, I could see the Ponies having some sort of rivalry or conflict with the Narrator. You could play that for laughs AND existential horror!

And...we actually have confirmation that the ponies in that artwork above WERE fan OCs, after all. Kinda a shame. But, understandable. Just a mixup. Those ponies are actually part of her D&D party!

And actually...that Pumpkin-Carving pony is a pre-existing character?!

Her name's "Ember Sword", supposedly, and she showed up WAY back during the Nightmare Rarity arc in issue #8, 13 years ago!

Also...I guess she's a ponified Seanan McGuire? Maybe? She's got a tag on the artwork. I don't know where the name "Ember Sword" actually comes from, maybe off Twitter, back in the day. Seanan McGuire really has been a fan of this series longer than most people assume, I guess.

Hah! And if this book indeed starts post season 3, it shouldn't conflict with the first few IDW issues. Ember Sword's first appearance may remain viably canon.

Just a little heads up. You can now pre-order Boom's first collection of IDW's run on the comic on Amazon.

You can't really beat the price. 16 issues for $15. Mind you, I'm pretty sure this is the "compact edition", so it's going to be closer to manga-sized. But, still, if you've never read IDW's run on the comic, this isn't a bad way to do it. It comes out on January 5, so you'll have a while to wait, but it's something to keep in mind.

BOOM! The comics are back!

November 11! Save the date! We even get a little 3 page preview in the links above, if you're curious. And it's looking pretty good! It's another G4 story, alright!

The only negative? Well...it's going to be $5 a issue. But, that's the way the comic industry as a whole is slowly heading towards, so I can't really blame them for that.

Still, it's good to have the comics back! I've missed them!

We were told this is post season 3, but this is clearly post season 4.

How is My Little Pony the thing that turned me into a tedious comic book nerd?
