As I said in the random thoughts thread, happy Moon Landing Day! And to that end, I have a (glare-y) box:
Kinda marathoned this one, and yes my hands hurt, but this is such a neat kit and I have very few nits to pick with it. As much as I have cut down on Lego, NASA sets will always get me. It's a big'n completed, standard Lego Astronaut for scale. Almost R/C car sized.
There are tons of details that I couldn't get a reasonable picture of with my phone camera - the control panel, the cargo locker in the back with the brick-built tools, the moon rock tucked back in there...it's good stuff. I'm not a big Technic guy, so the number of times I was going "what the hell is
this supposed to do" stayed on the entertaining side.
But the really neat trick is that it can break down and fold up more or less as the real article did to be stowed in the Apollo lander. There's practically no cheating - lift the modules off, pluck a couple of antenna mounts, and unlock a few sliders and levers. The chassis crumples in on itself, and the modules all have their own display alongside the, uh, wad of wheels:
And purely coincidentally, it also looks pretty right with last year's
buildable astronaut dude, which is a happy coincidence. The scale's not
quite there, and he can't sit down (at least, not without a complete hip rebuild), but for it to look as good as it does is great.
Really, I have two quibbles with this set worth noting. One mechanically - that yellow antenna in the back is made out of rubber bands, 'cause there's no way to get that shape in normal pieces without some chicanery; I always worry about rubber band durability. My one
actual complaint has to do with stickers - there are a lot, and for the most part they're not bad. Even the chrome ones don't trouble me after doing Discovery's payload bay doors. But I said 'for the most part'. There are no fewer than four UCS plaques in this set, for the display stands, and those always bother me; they're so hard to get an acceptable degree of straight, even, and clean. I could swear I read somewhere that Lego was going back to prints for the UCS-style plaques, but I can't find hide or hair of such a thing now.
So. This is a big, expensive, and pretty niche set. If you're a NASA fan? Definitely recommended. If not, that's up to your wallet. I got my copy from Barnes & Noble, and had enough points to bring it down to just under $200. Which is still a lot, but I made budget room for this one!
