So another little title I've waiting for has dropped today: Apocalypter. The bastard son of gear head garage, the long drive, and mad max.
And lemme tell ya!... You ain't max. You're a background NPC. If you work REAL hard, put in the effort, be the smartest of the smart, the toughest of the tough, and strongest of the strong: you might just be maxine.
This game is ruthless. Procedurally generated world, no map, barely a compass. No way to make fire on your own (that I've found.), so no way to cook food, no way to bring the bed you need to sleep with you. POI's are far between (though technically infinite.) and usually full of things that are just as hungry and tired as you are. Like giant spiders. Or giant scorpions. Or Wild Dogs... or mutants of all kinds; like bats the size of a V8 blocks, or something dog like with glowing green eyes and a nasty bite. Or Giant worms! Or explosive rats!
There are guns, I know there are. I've been shot before. There are people out there, I know there are, who do you think shot me? I've found a trader, he wanted nothing of what I had, but at least he had a bed I could crash in. And you need to search everywhere. I found a custom v8 exhaust in a cave full of spiders, so my dune buggy with a motorcycle engine looks absolutely friggen BOSS... as I struggle to climb a gentle hill. I did find another engine while out there... but it was the same thing I had my buggy and in much worse condition.
One of the selling points is the customization. Find parts, use parts. Lifted suspension, truck wheels, massive exhaust manifolds. Tweak the placements and angles, adjust the gear ratio, slap on a super charger. Put a diesel on a motorcycle frame, or a big 8 into a truck. Bolt some crates to the side to cart your jive (like the reams of mutant meat you carve off the animals intent on killing you... which you cannot cook because you have no fire.), and all of that in early ps2 graphical glory.
I am enjoying the game, but it does swing from terror and disappointment to gentle boredom pretty frantically. Controls are janky and weirdly laid out, game stutters... it's an awesome premise, but it needs work. I've not even gotten to gunplay yet, can't find any guns, can't afford them, got no ammo... not taking on the places where those things could be found without one.
