So, this is a thing:
Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass will be hitting American screens next month. This was announced earlier this week, btw. Research reveals this was a China production, which was released LAST YEAR to poor reviews and pretty piddly box office, internationally. Viva Pictures is picking up the film for a US release…but with no marketing, no buzz, and pretty poor response from the few that saw it last year…this is probably going to be a theatrical blip before it gets dumped to streaming.

Oh! Is Tom and Jerry big in China? I coincidentally saw the Death Battle between Tom and Wile Coyote and during his info part, there was a weird backstory where Tom and Jerry were part of Chinese Mythology.

At 10:44 mark. Its from a Tom and Jerry Chase game. Crazy.

Coyote vs Acme is out. GO SEE IT!

Seriously, I saw it, and it was VERY good. Maybe something that will age even better. Lots of heart, not sure it’s got that “bust out laughing” effect…but it is also FAR more clever than it has any right to be. It’s a cleverly subversive family film that doesn’t go for the “cheap jokes”…unless you count Wile’s perennial encounter with Murphy’s Law to be a cheap joke.
The cast are gung ho and it shows. Tweetie and Cena’s “desert meeting” is a chef’s kiss in deadpan dialog word play (“Tell me what you tee, tell me what you taw”)

It’s a solid, mid-tier, hybrid comedy that seemed destined for cult status. But Warner’s actions put a much higher spotlight on it, and serves to elevate much of the corporate satire the film had to begin with. It won’t make Spider-Man money, but I hope it makes a solid $100-150 million just to stick it to WBD

Been looking forward to it! Hope to go see it this weekend.

I saw Coyote vs. Acme yesterday and I'm still stunned by how good it is. Like I knew I'd enjoy it, but I wasn't expecting it to be one of my favorite films in years. It's so incredibly heartfelt and compelling. I didn't expect a Looney Tunes movie, and especially not a Wile E. Coyote movie, to make me tear up, but sure enough there's a scene in the final act that got me.

It deserves to be a huge success and I really hope people don't sit out on it at the theater. This one's worth the visit.

Coyote vs Acme has seemingly become the latest example of the disconnect between the internet fuss and actual financial reality:
First weekend is tracking to a haul of around $15.5 million. While not a BAD result relative to other films on the market right now (it was number 2 behind Spider-Man), given typical drop offs, it doesn’t feel like the film is going to recoup the $50 million Ketchup spent to actually distribute the film. The again, given the upcoming release slate, Coyote vs Acme might have a longer life due to word of mouth and lack of meaningful competition in the family friendly sector (Shaun of the Sheep comes out in a couple weeks, but isn’t a big thing in the US. Tom and Jerry is barely a blip on the radar).
The biggest family friendly films coming are reissues of older films. Coyote v Acme might end up a solid slow burn success, but we’ll have to see. And we’ll have to see how Dreamworks’ Forgotten Island is received at the end of the month.

It's Ketchup's biggest opening ever, and they sold the international rights already for $20 million.

Between good word of mouth and steaming rights in perpetuity, they'll probably be fine.

Better it has a mediocre release than vanish into the ether.

I saw it this weekend with the family and we all really enjoyed it. The "Will Forte delivering ridiculous lines in a straight-faced manner" jokes were 100% up my alley. I could see very young children maybe getting a bit bored in between the more cartoony, slapstick bits as a lot of the humor is definitely intended for a slightly older crowd (not "blue" at all, you just have to be paying attention to the dialog and aware of the tropes and all that), but my 16 year old loved it.

Just got back from CvA! I went in knowing the trailers and "not the slapstick comedy you're expecting", and it was a lot of fun. I thought the human/cartoon interaction was really well done, the voice acting is about as good as you're going to get, and some of those cameos were really deep cuts.

Coyote vs Acme is now available for preorder on both digital and for a Limited Edition Steelbook edition (which includes both Blu-ray and 4K BluRay). $40 if going physical, which I did for the general support of the film. No release date, but I’m expecting it to see release around Christmas.

In terms of box office, CvA is just a chugging along. Helped by lack of meaningful competition in the kids/family space (Seriously, pickings are so slim the 20th Anniversary screenings for Cars are doing decent business), the film actually EXPANDED last weekend to 150 additional locations. The result was a Labor Day weekend haul that actually matched opening weekend. The film currently stands at $41 million, some 2/3s of the way to Masters of the Universe’s domestic haul after just two weeks. Adding in international, the film is at $58 million.
While the film make see some loss of screens thanks to the impending release of Resident Evil and Forgotten Island (which I think will cause the most damage to the film’s appeal and screens), the film could yet end above $50 million domestic, before international returns and home media returns.

Anybody watch Forgotten Island?

I really want it to succeed so Disney and Pixar will get jealous and they make a Filipino Disney Princess movie.

I swear, it's a great movie! Amazing from an animation standpoint. Funny though might be fast paced? Very creative, even with liberties with the mythology that I know.

They got some pronunciations wrong. With one of the directors being Filipino American, they could have coaches the voice actors.

I did tear up watching it so it's emotional. Just hope people give it a chance.
