Making it anonymous would definitely make it worse for the Republicans. There's a non-zero possibility some of them would be so fed up with their party, that they'd vote for the Democrat nominee, and the Republican party would tear itself apart even more with suspicion and accusations.

The conservatives here, who are polling highly for the general election next month, have said they're going to roll back basically all of the climate change legislation if they get in, although they're still committed to the net zero carbon target which they're going to achieve... somehow.

In perhaps a sign of the times, it's the lead up to a general election at the moment in New Zealand, and today both the major parties have had to do damage control for candidates who had previously posted anti-vax, and/or anti-flouride conspiracy stuff to social media.
