You know, I had a whole much longer thing that I wanted to write up and say about this thing, about how it failed at the one thing it set out to do (be animation-accurate) while exceeding at things no one asked for (suddenly trains are BAE!🤪), and how it looked like it was half made by the first run of 3rd-party TF designers to ever create the concept of 3rd-party TFs (by inserting random polygons when you’ve run out ideas of what actual details should be):

…. but then I realized that this whole thing was designed by AI, so it makes total sense that it’s the weird mess that it is.😒

Can’t say I completely hate it though, if I dedicated all this time to photograph and write about it. And honestly, I don’t.

It’s got storage capabilities for all its accessories in all modes (yes, even the smoke dildo), and its transformation is buttery-smooth with very little fiddly nonsense. And everything locks into place the ways it should, if you know how to get it there (yes, even the wing gaps in robot mode; that double-joint is there for a reason).

It’s also hella poseable. Might not look the best in all modes and it’s def not show-accurate, especially as a robot. But it’s fun enough to fiddle with. And it accomplishes very well looking like, well, a 3rd-party Astrotrain.😆

I might have justified the emaciated robot mode if both altmodes were stellar. The train mode is an improvement but the shuttle mode looks even more like a half-finished Lego build than Siege.
I think the Hasbro AI model suddenly decided TF fans really love trains, and so made the trainliest train mode to ever train, and then reluctantly created a robot mode out of it, and then designed about 2/3rds of a shuttle before running out of computing power or info from its reference data and then just filled in the missing 3rd of it with shapes. I’m so disappointed this thing was made with AI, but it explains every inconsistent design choice IMO.

Was it confirmed that Astrotrain was designed by AI? Google isn't turning anything up. I know their CEO was talking about using an Optimus Prime AI model to somehow participate in the design process but nothing shows up about Astrotrain.

Think SS86 Astrotrain was one of the first brand new designs that came out after that announcement so, context clues. But if y’all wanna do a deep dive and write and interview designers or alladat whatever to prove me wrong I’m not gonna stop you.😆

This sounds amazing.

Cocks: so what we were thinking is we'd make a new mold for Astrotrain. What do you think?

Chat OPT: That sounds like a great idea! It is about time someone delved into the Triple Changers, out of the rich tapestry of Transformers designs. Fate rarely calls upon them at a moment of the budget's choosing. There is a treasure trove of great designs here!

Cocks: here's the concept art.

Chat OPT: Amazing work! The visible and very toyetic jointing really underscores how committed the design team is to making this happen. The notes about which parts will likely need certain types of plastic shows forethought and intricate knowledge of the process -- and the comprehensive understanding of the character shines through as well. The train mode in particular is very reminiscent of the classic animation model and reflects a deep understanding of the fan demand for media accuracy.

Cocks: but will that robot mode work?

Chat OPT: That is absolutely possible. It's crucial that you enhance the likelihood of this happening by reviewing the budgetary limitations for this. Execution is a very nuanced concern, and previous models suggest that this would be better slotted into the Commander class. Fortunately, there is some room in this year's assortments.

Cocks: No, there isn't. Here are all the Commander class figures for the year.

Chat OPT: You are absolutely correct, sorry about that -- the implications of those filled slots would include considerable changes. I have put together a few visualizations of them here that still leverage the best elements of the design and emphasize the personality of the character.

Cocks: We have to make the limbs THAT thin?

Chat OPT: That is correct, if you want to adhere to the rest of the design. This worked for the last Astrotrain you released in the Age of the Primes line, where the design changes allowed for a comfortable project margin.

Cocks: We didn't have one in the Age of the Primes line.

Chat OPT: You're right, that's my mistake.

Cocks: Are you hallucinating all of this?

Chat OPT: Hallucinations are like dreams. The future is built on dreams.

Astrotrain would have started development between two or three years ago, according to designer comments on the process. While AI would probably churn content out quickly, the end product would still need to be manufactured in overseas factories. By the time CEO was yapping in March, Astrotrain was probably already in transit to retailers. Looking at Youtube, the channel who consistently acquires toys early posted a review of it in February. While they could have used AI to design Astrotrain, I highly doubt that when the CEO chooses runs his mouth is any indication of anything.

I love the pics, and I love that you are having fun with your new Transformer. I will always support people having fun with their toys. However, I still don't think that this version of Astrotrain is worth it for me. But if you like it and you are having fun with it, mission accomplished!

Astrotrain, please eat a sandwich or something; people are worried about you.
