Michael McConnohie: "Why would robots sweat?!!"

When I got to meet Michael McConnohie at BotCon 2022, I started talking to him about his time on Robots in Disguise 2001 (since he voiced Hot Shot and Ironhide in that show's English dub), and he immediately stopped me because he told me upfront just how critical he was of that series, especially how he found much of that show's humor to be really off-putting and dumb. He especially criticized the show's use of sweat-drops for its visual gags, when that's a very common practice in anime comedy. But for him, it was simply too much because the characters who had the sweat-drops were robots. The quote above this spoiler section is a direct quote that he said to me.

He also glazed the G1 cartoon for how all the Autobots got along so well with each other and were generally good role models for children, while also bashing Beast Wars because of how the Maximals were such a dysfunctional family who bickered and disagreed with each other, which in his eyes took things way too far.

Sounds like a joyful fellow to meet.
Well, after the n'th question about how Tracks was intended to be protrayed/viewed in however many years of conventions....

This wasn't that line of questioning, though, which makes things all the more perplexing. I can understand why he might not understand Japanese anime shorthands showing up in a robot cartoon (after all, they weren't in The Transformers, which was animated by Toei, and that studio didn't really (aside from some design homages with Starscream's coronation in The Animated Movie), lean into such visual shorthands until Victory....)

...but his takes on Beasties don't really seem to be consistent with what had been shared about the process. Larry DiTillio would no doubt have some words in response, as I had mentioned last time Sabr had had told us of McConnohie's opinions of that show and its writing.
