A Long Time Ago In a Galaxy Far, Far Away.... - Star Wars General Discussion

I want to go see it again.

I'm unlikely to be able to cause time, money and Masters of the Universe coming up. But it was SO good and all the love for it on my feed really is making me wish I could go watch it one more time this weekend.

-ZacWilliam, all the special effects shine on the big screen, awesome monsters, Harryhausen vibes, and the film is just so damn fun.

Edit: Kept seeing folks posting these so just for fun I made one with my updated rankings. To be fair everything above #9 is a "Love" and everything below #9 is a "LIKE" there isn't a Star Wars I wouldn't watch. :)

I like all Star Wars, and I still find this ranking WILD.

Really liked the movie. Just felt like 2 episodes of Mando.

Drug just a little bit in the middle.

Grogu caring for Dinn goes on a bit long.

We get a lot of good action scenes, but I was surprised we didn't get Mando FULLY equiped from the gun runner ship. I was expecting a scene like when Boba first showed up and uses every single one of his weapons. I expected jet pack rocket, wrist rockets, whistling bird and every other weapon and gadget we have seen him use (obviously not the dark saber).

1-8 are rock solid in their places for me. 9 to the end there's more room to maybe switch them up.

The only one I feel like needs any explaining is Rogue One which I consider a good movie but is not what I want in a Star Wars movie. I want my Star Wars to be "fun all-ages pulpy space opera fantasy adventures" while Rogue One is too much an adult aimed tragic war movie. A good one, but again, not what I want in a Star War.

-ZacWilliam, and again I honestly love or like them all, just to varying extents.

Saw it last night. The family and I all quite enjoyed it. It was a simple, straightforward, and relatively low-stakes but fun Star Wars adventure. I've seen several complaints that it doesn't feel "epic" enough for a Star Wars movie, but I don't need or even want every single movie in the franchise to be a galaxy-threatening sort of plot. I think that when a franchise goes back to that well too often, it starts to feel tiresome (see: Superhero movies where every single climax is a world-ending skybeam). Sometimes it's nice to just get a fun, exciting movie that takes place in a small corner of that shared universe, which I think this one does very well.

Too much "War" in your Star Wars?

I watched Mandalorian and Grogu a week back but didn't really feel like commenting on it.

Yeeeah, I think I nodded off when Grogu was taking care of Dinn. It was too quiet and cold in the cinema, haha.

The aliens in the arena were creepy fantastic but they couldn't do any ripping apart, limbs torn, blood gushing cuz of the rating.

Rotta's name, I kept hearing as Rada. I liked him a lot actually. I'm sure he didn't crush his opponent to death when we first saw him.

What happened to Dinn's 'wizard' ship? I liked that smaller compact ship. Did he just abandon it after he got the bigger one?

For the aliens, they're actually all the aliens from the holo chess game in the Millennium Falcon. That reference is on purpose in-universe, as the match was called a Dejarik match (Dejarik being the name of that chess-like game in the Star Wars universe) and the pit floor is painted up as the chess board.

As for Dinn's Naboo starfighter, you briefly see it parked outside his house, so he does still have it. If they keep doing the show, I kind of expect that at some point we'll see Dinn piloting the Razor Crest while Grogu pilots the fighter, maybe in a flash-forward to when Grogu is a bit older.

You see the N1 parked next his domicile on Navaro.

The arena monsters were the holo chess pieces?! Holy cow, I didn't catch that. Didn't notice the chess board either! Wow!

Grogu piloting the 'wizard' would be cool.

Now I want to see UFC do a "Chess Match" where they make a fighter battle against a footsoldier, a horse, a bishop, and a royal couple inside of a castle.

So I like Clone Wars.
I Love Rebels.
I love Bad Batch.
Love Maul. And the Tales Of and Visions series...

You might have noticed something missing on this list. Or maybe you didn't because it's the Star Wars cartoon that is rarely mentioned. "Resistance."

I watched most of S1 of Resistance as it was coming out and I didn't hate it but it didn't catch me like the shows I listed above. It was, at its very best "Ok." And I didn't finish the first season and when it didn't get renewed I never bothered to watch any of Season 2.

But recently that's felt like a bit of a hole so I'm going back to watch the series and give it a second look.

My first thoughts after watching the first 4 episodes:

1) I like the designs and colors. I know some people are put off by the animation style, I'm fine with that but what I'm talking about are the colors and designs of everyone's ship and costuming. I really really like it visually.

2) And that's the best thing I have to say about the show so far. The Plot and especially the characters have issues. The plot is mostly background so far but amounts to "Poe picks a kid who's extremely poorly suited to be a spy to spy out a First Order Operative and leaves him behind to probably die." It's meant to be Poe instinctively seeing the potential in the kid, but he's SO BAD at it that it just seems irresponsible and borderline abusive the situation Poe has placed him in. It's been four eps and he's almost died more than a half dozen times.

2) And you can really tell why this cast wasn't embraced like the Rebels family unit or the Bad Batch. Here the cast:

Kaz - the main character. He's Ezra if instead of a street rat jedi Ezra was a rich kid pilot who's bad at EVERYTHING. Yeah early Ezra could be headstrong and make mistakes but he also had strengths, and cool moments and competent moments. Kaz so far is all empty bravado, mistakes, clumsiness and failing at everything. The show gives him ZERO moments where he's actually cool or even marginally competent. He is always a failure and a joke. I read an interview where the creators said his concept was that he was incredibly awkward on land but amazing in a ship but the show has failed so far to even make him good at that. He's been in a racing ship twice and lost and crashed both times. And he's such a loser the rest of the time it's ridiculous.

Neeku - He's Skeeter from the Nicktoon Doug. Protagonist's space-cadet friend whose only thing is to be Unflaggingly Cheerful, Vaguely Annoying and Obliquely Weird.

Tam - A mechanic girl who hates Kaz. She only ever says angry, frustrated or suspicious things to him. And he is awful, but she's so aggressively mean to him without any other characteristics at all so far that you don't like her either.

And lastly their "Mentor" figure Yeager who wants nothing to do with Kaz or his mission and is very grudgingly letting him fail to pretend to be a mechanic because he feels like he owns Poe something.

Other than Neeku who is dumb as a post and likes everyone none of these characters like each other or are likable to the Audience at least so far in the first 4 episodes.

I think maybe they get a bit better as the show goes on, but we'll see. I'll report back.

-ZacWilliam, again I do like the outfits and colors on Kaz and his Patty Mayonnaise Torra, and on all the ships, but so far that's the highlight.
