"HEAT WAVE, my island in the sun!!!"

Its a hot day here in the UK, while I not long had my evening meal, I'm about to go and get some jelly and icecream to help cool off more!

It's more of a black comedy. I think they're supposed to be idiots.
Baz Lhurmann's Romeo and Juliet (the one with the modern setting but original dialogue) definitely has its black comedy moments.

China Girl (another modern setting take, straight-to-video) does play up the tragedy more, especially in how it gives a Hope Spot at the end but then has the "girl" in question take a bullet meant for her boyfriend as they are caught trying to elope.

shakespeare was a hack. 'oh so im gonna write the most generic stories imaginable and fill them with clichéd phrases' total snoozefest and most overrated 'playwright' in history

Believe it or not, a few of his contemporaries thought just that. "Who is this jumped-up actor who thinks he can *write* plays as well?" goes one surviving letter that is sometimes published in introductions to the Bard's works.

His success despite such criticism could be an example of "Ah, but he knew his audiences". The transition from popular culture to high culture may be due to Early Modern English sounding more "affected" to modern ears....

Let's just say that while I appreciate a good delivery of any of the works, one doesn't look at the historical plays the same way when one studies what little is known of the actual life and times of MacBeth mac Finlay, King of Scots.

I liked one of his sarcastic sonnets. The plays could get frustrating. Like you couldn't get it without having to stop every other sentence to check the footnotes. Like the Shakespeare fans are so SURE you'll like his work if you only research the history of the play first, the actual meaning of the words as they meant back then, no you don't understand how clever this line is...

It could get annoying when it feels like the footnotes are telling you what to think, but without them it's really hard to understand.
Titus Andronicus is my least fave of his plays. Not a fan for the same reason I don't like Beserk.
"Ok, what's the worst thing I can make happen for shock value?"
"Excellent. Now I'm going to keep making it worse and worse."

yeah but Titus Andronicus could only be improved by an effeminate psychopath in a Temu Batman costume.

Shakespeare’s alright. Not many new ideas but he’s good at presenting old stories in a novel way. Now, Broadway musicals on the other hand, deserve all the contempt.

I’d put them under brainrot Tiktoks since at least those have the decency to be short and are honest about being nothing more than stupid dopamine hits.

Is this about musical lovers getting uppity about how great the shows are? I've been to some and never had an issue w/ other people attending. You get some rabid/pretentious fans, but that goes for any form of entertainment, including media about transforming robots.

If any significant number of transformers fans start acting like the equivalent of mashing toys against each other was high art, I’ll jive on them too. The fact that both fans and the actors of musicals act like overacting and cheezy singing during their mediocre stories are god’s gift to humanity make me think it’s a systemic thing.

As a personal thing, an interview with an actor in a Broadway group during the pandemic when they closed theaters said something along the lines of “you wouldn’t tell a doctor to find a new job to pay the bills.”

Screw them. That narcissistic theater kids stuck with a high school level mentality can even think they deserve even being in the same paragraph with us, let alone say it out loud offends me. The Romans were right.

Meanwhile opera houses responded to the pandemic by dumping past performances on YouTube for free. It was great.

They can be fun fluff, like dumb movies and trashy romance novels. I honestly think it's unfair to label it all as trash just because of some dumb people (again, just like any form of media). Though I'll agree that they're not supposed to be super serious.

I like how due to the hodgepodge of numerous forms of media, poor communication and different designers, it is semi-canon in Dragon Ball that the indication of mastering Super Saiyan 3 is the ability to retain their eyebrows
