THE Transformers THE Movie THE Apology Tour: We're Sorry for Killing Optimus Prime

You know, we joke about a lot of things that the movie did and could have done better, but killing off Optimus to replace him with Rodimus was apparently just the tip of the iceberg according to an old review of the movie from 1998 that I found on alt.toys.transformers back when I was making the ATT archive that I made on the wiki.

I've been meaning to share this review on here for some time since I found it rather amusing, but kept forgetting about it. But now, in light of this occasion, I guess now's as good a time as any.

It was written by Robert Powers (also known online as "repowers") and followed a screening of the movie at BotCon 1998.

I agree fully with this, aside from the Quintesson stuff. I think complaining about them "surviving" is veering well into the realm of nitpicking. Acting like those are the only beings on an entire planet is kind of weird. I've always said that the plot and story of the movie are absolute trash and he nails all the reasons why.

But, an important thing to note, is those aren't the only elements to judge a movie by. The story is bad, but the writing produced some all-time classic lines, brought to life by an genuinely great cast of series alumni and surprising performances from the newcomers. (Even Orson Welles' Unicron is quite good despite his poor health at the time, a testament to the sound engineer. The mix of Welles' wheezy voice and the effects put onto it made something unique. I have never heard another character that sounds anything like that in 40 years). The animation, for the most part, is pretty good and sometimes is absolutely fantastic, while the mix of 80's metal and synth has, IMO, never been topped as a better soundtrack for Transformers.

And while it was done for the more crass reasons, there's no denying the first twenty to twenty-five minutes of the movie is kinetic, exciting and has actual consequences for a change. And we will never, EVER see anything like it again, I don't think. No kids franchise is going to decide to have a movie that takes a series where characters never really get killed, and then just start mercing dudes left and right, including some of the most popular ones. That juxtaposition just will not happen again.

It's a bad movie, but it's also a classic, and an incredibly unique point in entertainment history.

Art be complicated, yo.

I was rewatching the movie late last night because of restlessness (even though I had a late shift) and remember something my brother said when we were kids: 'the movie might have been made for 3D.'. I kept that in mind and couldn't unsee it at times.

There are definitely some moments that would work well in 3D. I have to admit that a well done 3D conversion of the movie would be pretty awesome.

There are some AI powered 3D conversion tools out there for professional use. I'm actually kinda surprised nobody has stuck it through Owl3D and put that on YouTube.

I'm imagining that layering error with Unicron in the opening scene, in 3D, and I'm already getting a headache.
Now, imagine that, but lasting for the next 85 minutes, complete with Stan Bush, Lion, N.R.G., and Spectre General all screaming in your ear the whole time. Have fun!

So apparently this is still a thing, with some 24 hour countdown clock to something or another going around as a FB reel that I can't figure out how to link. Its on tfw's front page.

Hopefully someone more FB/message board savvy than me can link it here, I tried and eventually gave up.

I'm guessing its a HasLab announcement that the next release will be a Transformer who turns into a 1 gallon gas can with a Beast Wars Stampy styled alt-mode named 'PetroRabbit'.

Seems like it doesn't wanna embed, so just a direct link:

Also in Instagram (which cannot embed on this forum anyway):

This lets you reclassify it as adult trauma so you can gripe about it to your therapist without it being a 'preexisting condition' your insurance won't cover. They're really picky on those technicalities...though I still think they should have shown The Return of Optimus Prime parts 1 and 2 as a double feature with the movie to bookend it.

Add "Dark Awakening" in the middle between them, or else the beginning of "The Return of Optimus Prime" makes no sense coming right off the back of the movie.

As if anyone is surprised.

"Dark Awakening" actually makes the beginning of "Return" worse when you think about it.

I would think it would be the opposite, with the beginning of "Return" retconning the ending of "Dark Awakening" making Optimus's sacrifice at the end far less meaningful.
