Evan Brooks' comments from last year about a potential SS86 Rodimus:

"If we do an 86 Rodimus, he would be new. And that is something that we’ve kind of been talking about with the Takara Tomy team as well. They would like to do a new one. It’s a very different execution, different plans, different priorities as well. So he will be in mainline, and we’ll just see where he ends up."

So maybe the real reason Rodimus Prime was so mopey in the cartoon is because he gave up his cool car mode for a bulky Winnebago, and then never got to use the big guns he was lugging around.

When it comes to a potential SS86 Rodimus Prime, though - I'd absolutely be down for one where his legs did become a flatbed - or did nothing at all - so that everything else could have proportions like the original toy. The Space Winnebago was its' own weird thing, but it's iconic. Let moody weird Rodimus be Rodimus. Seconding what Coffeehorse said -

Just give me the vehicle mode with zero compromises to accommodate a standalone car mode. Hot Rod has his own toys. Leave it alone.

I can see the desire to give the front half its own full altmode because it separates from the trailer anyway and might as well have a complete shape. And I do prefer it separating -- I don't want an Origins Wheeljack situation where the trailer has to collapse into a million panels, some mini, some "I'm carrying flattened boxes on my back". For a trailer that size, we're not likely to get anything fancier than that at regular retail.

I wouldn't mind something like a Siege Ironhide where the back half was a box, sort of a streamlined trailer, with the spoiler able to move/reattach as a rear vane thing. Maybe the rear box splits or reconfigures to flatten out to fit inside/under the trailer.

Or just make it flat to begin with. Funny enough, for all the Kuptimus Prime talk, I'm sure there's a concept pickup whatever that could work too, like the G1 toy but with the back half actually fleshed out into a truck flatbed instead of a robot planking. It'd also be a funny blend of young robot (the Hot Rod aesthetic) and older robot (Kup-like altmode), perfect for the midlife crisis blazing chrome Space Winnebago.

I just don't know how you design something like this and just... NOT have the trailer enclose it. That could've been done with even the Kingdom one (although the spoiler would also need to move forward).

or did nothing at all

I'd rather they do something there. When I was a kid, Rodimus Prime was my Prime, but it always drove me nuts that I couldn't separate the cab from the trailer the way the cartoon did, or the way Optimus could. That's one thing I really liked with Kingdom. They really gave Rodimus a lot of those kinds of features that Optimus had but he was missing.

I mean, if they did more to, say, replace those features, that would be one thing. But it was pretty much all subtraction, no addition (except that the trailer could roll on its own, that was schway).

That's like what I meant.

MP Rodimus shows it's possible to have the var mode and the Winnebago mode look good. The problem with Kingdom is that the standalone vehicle mode plugs into the RV unchanged. I mean, the spoiler already has to flip around, may as well move some more bits around to fit Rodimus better into the trailer.

To be fair, the MP9 does cheat with a shell for the Rodimus altmode front. There's something clever about how well it turns out, but I don't really want it done that way either.

I agree that Kingdom's standalone vehicle should have changed a bit to combine -- at the least, the spoiler moving forward, but also the rear half letting him line up within the trailer properly. Would've helped to have a bigger cavity for it to begin with. But then, the car front is still entirely too elongated.

Tsk. The more I look at the Kingdom one, the more I'm ready for a new mold.

Yeah, it cheats but I think the basic idea would work. If they could figure out a way to hide the front half of Hot Rod, they should be able to do the same with the back half, even if it would technically result in too long of a nose for Winnebago mode.

I'd rather they just not include a Hot Rod in that case. Let the old man turn into his own thing, even if that's a modified Hot Rod with an appropriately stubbier front end and a back half that can reconfigure to fit the trailer better.
