Takara Missing Link G1 Series

Maybe something like a Duocon, where both halves of the original toy's robot mode somehow combine to form this new robot mode?

I don't know. It seems like with a lot of these, they pull out something unexpected to surprise us ("Optimus's legs wouldn't work in Ultra Magnus's armor!" "But what if we... change the legs?" *collective gasp from the audience*), so I'm going to wait and see if that's what they do here before I pass judgment what they're doing.

I actually won't judge anything till I see the whole reveal. Even then, it may not be MY thing but if it sells and keeps the franchise going I'm all in favor. That being said, I think the most likely thing is 'optional' parts to stick onto the robot mode. I don't see how they can cram much more in, G1 ironhide and Ratchet were rather skeletal when you take the sled off.

all shitposting aside, i really do think that going so far in the sunbowification of ML ironhide is like...missing the point? idk i feel it's one thing to offer 'anime versions' where they're done in the cartoon colors or like having minor optional aesthetic changes (like how ML sunstreker has integrated fists + optional 'toy-style fists' or how ML grimlock can have his head positioned either in a normal position in robot mode or way far back like in g1) but idk maybe i'll have to see more than just a sillhouetted teaser image but going so far as to make a 'what if g1 ironhide's character model existed as a toy in 1984' is like...idk that feels straying too far from what missing link should be?
If you’re not making *any* changes, then you just want a reissue.

Toy Ironhide/Ratchet vary probably the most from their show counterparts. If you can still arrange the new stuff to give you how the original toy looked then I don’t see the problem.

I'm in the "need more information" camp here, but I honestly don't mind them changing up Ironhide/Ratchet a bit to suit the current line.

On the one hand, I can understand the argument that this might be engineering some of the originality out of the toy. On the other hand, though, I feel like there have been opportunities over the years for fans to get reissued, virtually unadulterated G1 versions of these guys, if that is what is desired. This, though, seems like a fun little "what if", and I am interested in seeing what the finished product will look like.

You can snag an Encore Ironhide for around $80 which is likely less than this will cost.

I don't think anyone's actually asking for a 1:1 reissue as opposed to a Missing Link-ed up version, with the new articulation. Even the G1 toy-style robot mode could still have a swivel neck (or a ball I guess, idk the structure) for the face panel, universal shoulder and hip joints, and so on.

Ths being a hypothetically optional anime edition setup would solve a lot of problems (whether by separating the extra stuff for another release or just allowing one to not use it), but we'll find out, I reckon.

A more fair comparison would be complaining that Sunstreaker “misses the point of the line” because he has new fold out fists instead of gigantic parts forming boxing gloves. Even though he 100% also comes with them and you can display him 1:1 to his old toy.

It looks like the roof/rear section attaches as a backpack, with the new arms and head folding out from there, IMO.

Which means the robot itself is likely exactly the same and the empty MARB sides have the head and limb apparatus. Have him ride on it and it’s the original toy or hook it to his back and fold out the head/arms for the Sunbow approximation.

I don't see it, Blud. There's visible mass on the torso that should be on the arms, and the forearms are all levels of wrong. There's also no seam on the van roof where it would normally split for the sled mode.

Unless this thing comes apart at the waist and there's an entire extra torso with its own set of arms in the box, the original robot mode isn't happening.

Not going to lie. I like it. I'd take that over Masterpiece, Earthrise, or SS86 any day.

But it's Missing Link. I want the original robot mode. This fails the assignment.

I was gonna say, I'd like this AS a mainline take. It's like a more fleshed-out Earthrise take (which was good but hobbled by just being a dressed-up Siege design).

I see the sled's cannons on the inside of his back and the drone's seat face inside his windshield. He may end up being more Duocon-like than we expected after all.
Again, it would need a whole different torso and arms. Otherwise, it doesn't matter if there's an alternate transformation that gives us something close to the original toy's layout. It's not going to pass the "Looks like it could be the original if you don't touch any of the added articulation" test that made Missing Link so neat.
