Part of me is disapointed.
I’m not sure what to make of it at this point.

One part of me IS a bit disappointed that this seems to be going against the “Diaclone with joints” structure of the line. But I’m also not sure if we’re not seeing some black magic being done by Tomy. I see two options:
1. Tomy “reverse designed” a Diaclone-type toy from the Sunbow animation model. A ”what if” of Ironhide (and Ratchet, by extension) had toys that were more directly streamlined like other Diaclone-derived characters.
2. We’re getting some wacky “combiner” like toy where they’ve redesigned the old battle sled to be able to combine with the meager original robot mode to create something closer to the animation model. Which, on a conceptual level, isn’t THAT far removed from something that could have been done in the 80s.

The image makes me think 1 is most likely…but I also think there are designers crazy enough at Tomy to make 2 a viable option as well.

My current guess is the battle sled has been replaced with an upper body/head/new arms assembly that plugs in. I would not be surprised if the toy can still become the toy-design or the new revised look.

-ZacWilliam, I wonder if they'd raise the price by including the original battle sled back-of-van AND a theoretical new body back-of-van.

I think it’s either stuff that can fold away to appear identical to the original toy or parts that can be swapped out to permit either mode.

There's just no way for that first option to work. The original Ironhide toy is small and spindley and there's just no where on it for anything to fold away or hide.

-ZacWilliam, now the sled has a little more room for that than the robot. I could see it becoming the new body parts like I said, but I don't think it could do that AND be true design wise for the original sled at the same time.

Takara just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by changing how a G1 toy looked. If you change how a G1 toy looked over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Missing Link Ironhide, nor will they purchase any of Takara's Transformers. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Takara has alienated an entire market with this move.

Takara, publicly apologize and cancel Missing Link Ironhide or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I need to see more....right now it feels a little like a betrayal of the concept of the missing link figures....but I need to see the final product.

Goes without saying that I'm referring to the sled. It's clearly on the promo image in a configuration not associated with the G1 toy for a reason.

I can kind of imagine a revamped version of the original sled that can disassemble into a bunch of upgrade kit style parts. A back plate (which we kind of see here), which can have the module for the fuller chest and head attached to it (plugs in atop the windshield/original face area), and parts that flesh out the arms (which can slide up on a track to be better aligned with the new chest/head). I kinda prefer that to two separate sled versions.

(Part of me thinks they should've just gone pure toy, but there IS precedent for "anime edition" versions in this line. Maybe there'll be a toy style one and an anime style one, each with its own sled.)

Is it wrong that, upon first seeing this, I initially thought it was Skids?

Back of the van/front of the sled pivots further down on an armiture, and then nests behind the chest (you can see the stripe from it in the promo image). This fills out the chest, and raises the reminder of the sled (van roof and sides) higher up to form his back, and keeps it from dragging the ground behind him. New head likely hides in the back of the van or parts forms. Daiclone mode and sled functionality would remain.

You say that as if Japan actually puts Transformers on a cultural pedestal like it does with Astro Boy, Gundam, Dragon Ball, or Kimba the White Lion.
