He-Man, and also the Masters of the Universe

Was debating between getting the 200x Origins He-Man and Skeletor, or the 200x Cartoon Collections ones. Which are a better option?
Depends on what you’re looking for:
the first 200x flavors are designed to compliment the broader Origins line. They are stockier or “Classic MOTU” styled, with 200x ELEMENTS on top of “classic” Skeletor and He-Man designs. If you have a broader range of Origins figures, these will “fit in” better.

The Cartoon Collection, as a whole, is more stylized and more reflective of how the characters appear on the cartoon absent any attempt to “fit in“ with other Origins offerings. If you JUST want 200x Collection figures, these are probably the ones to get, especially with Mattel rolling so many complimentary character is this style through the rest of the year.

Reminder that tomorrow is, TECHNICALLY, the launch day for Mattel’s Masters of the Universe film initiative. Some Walmarts are obviously putting stuff out early, and I’m sure some won’t touch anything until Monday. YMMV on local store availability this weekend. However, items should be going up for order across the web, and likely preorders for later assortments not shown yet.

BBTS has Skeletor shilling the new movie toys on social media.

Speaking of, some new information CAN be gleaned from BBTS’s newly active listings:
For Chronicles-
Wave 1/2 (as with other figure lines, it seems multiple waves are shipping concurrently) seems to include He-Man, Skeletor, Man At Arms, Trap Jaw, and TriKlops. Next Wave in July will include Teela and Ram Man (seems Fisto might be exclusive to the 2 pack…at least for now). The September wave will be Evil-Lynn and Beast Man (no images, yet)

For Core-
Like above, Waves 1 and 2 of both Core and Core Deluxe are shipping concurrently. Wave 3 in July will be Man At Arms and He-Man (new version), while wave 4 in September will feature new versions of Teela and Skeletor joined by TriKlops and Ram Man. No additional listings for deluxe figures or vehicles/playsets. Those might be locked until after the movie or SDCC, but I expect another wave of deluxe figures and some additional vehicles. And I would be SHOCKED if there wasn’t a Grayskull playset for Christmas.

Entertainment Earth will have listings going active later in the day and might give more perspective on the future assortments.

I told you! Not that it’s any surprise, but an Amazon Canada listing for a Masters of the Universe “First Ones” (one of the names that was bandied about for the Core/kids line in some materials) Playset for $119.99 in Maple Money. If dimensions are accurate, it promises to be a beefy offering.
So yeah, I guess Core Castle Grayskull confirmed?

More reveals on the back of the new film product launch:
Wave 5 of the 200x Cartoon Collection has been revealed- Webstor, Buzz-Off and Keldor. I’ve been eagerly awaiting those bug men, so I’m glad to see them confirmed. Now, if only Mattel would give me some Snakemen…

In terms of the new film stuff, Mattel’s “digital catalog” images have seemingly leaked. Released by Mattel in years past, they’ve done “cross sell images” of their entire season’s offerings. With April 28th being “He-Man Day”, my suspicion is that Mattel planned to release images that day. Regardless, it does offer looks at the rest of the Core figures on slate for preorder, including the second versions of He-Man, Tesla, and Skeletor. Keep in mind this does NOT seem to cover fall/holiday initiatives and releases.

He-Man is now sporting grey armor and pants with a more muted palette. Hard to tell from the size of the image, but Mattel did show a second head sculpt for Core He-Man during the initial reveal for the line back before Toy Fair, so I wonder if that’ll get used. Tesla sports more muted colors and a “hair up” look akin to her second head sculpt included with the Chronicles figure. Skeletor is, best I can tell, being cast in translucent elements. Which should look awesome.

In addition, images from Mattel’s official store in El Segundo California are making the rounds, showing a “full slate” as well as some ”in hand” images of figures. The one that stood out to me was deluxe Core Trap Jaw, which sported more muted colors than the promotional renders, and generally looks better.

BBTS has updated product pages with more current promotional images rather than the prerelease stuff initially sent out. I’m posting the link to Trap Jaw so you guys can see the final production deco. It is MUCH improved over the initial images, with darker skin and better contrast on the grey and metal elements. They also opted to use a metallic purple for highlights instead of the green/teal popping up on other figures of the character. I think it might open the door for a cheaper, non-feature, version of the character later on…but we’ll see. Same is true of Roboto, I guess, but I think it will all depend on how well the line does in these first few weeks up to and right after the film’s opening.

I’m still betting on Man At Arms and either Beast Man or Evil-Lynn getting deluxe figures in the second batch this fall. Alongside new versions of He-Man and Skeletor, of course.

The push, it be ramping up!
First off, fun note, in some international markets the film will actually be called "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe". If you saw the Sony India trailer release, it is sporting that title.

ALSO, Amazon/MGM dropped two featurettes for the film.
First off, Heroes of Eternia, featuring some action from Mekaneck and words of wisdom from Ram Man

And the Forces of Evil, showing some depth from Skeletor and...IS THAT KARG?!

Toys are “officially” out, and images are flooding the web as orders are filled. My local Walmart has NOT put out anything related to MOTU or Toy Story 5. Lots of clearance for stragglers like Superman, How to Train Your Dragon, and some major slimming down of Jurassic World, so I’m hoping they’ll stock something before too long. I suspect for “Lesser” stores like mine, they might be waiting for the end of May when they can just put all 3 major summer lines (Masters, Toy Story, and Spider-Man) out at the same time instead of rolling changes.

My local gripes aside, some interesting new toy info! The Amazon Core 4 pack has been made available overseas. Toy Habits has a nice comparison shot with the 4 pack and the single card versions (where applicable). Goat Man is exclusive to this set, while Man At Arms won’t have his single figure released until mid-summer alongside a new He-Man. While initially written off as “repacks”, He-Man and Skeletor sport some differences, from “Just different enough to make you mad” to “major design differences”

Skeletor is the biggest surprise: he features some significant tooling differences to support a soft goods cape instead of the molded one featured on the stand alone release. In addition, there have been tweaks to the deco that I can’t chalk up to “factory variation” like I can with He-Man. His face in the multipack is more yellow, possibly the result of less “paint wash” to bring out facial details while the Havoc staff has a new wash to better accentuate the bone look on it. With the soft goods cape, I think the figure will have more/better head movement than the standard release…but I also don’t feel it looks as good as the single release (not to mention losing that fantastic “spinal seam” molded on that figure)
Contrary to my initial impression, Goat Man is all new and, as of right now, not seemingly slated for another release venue. He looks impressive.

He- Man isn’t as big a deal. The biggest is the blonder hair relative to the more orange tone the single card release sports. Hard to tell if that is intentional or just an issue from being made at another factory. The rest of the figure sports minor plastic and paint “color range” differences…but again, hard to tell how much of it was intentional.
I would assume that Man At Arms won’t be significantly different from his single card, though it is entirely possible that, if the changes to He-Man were intentional, then the single card release might have some color tone differences. Maybe the single card will be more “yellow gold” instead of the “orange bronze” of this release? We’ll have to wait and see.

Probably the biggest benefit with the multipack is the price: At $37.99, it’s already cheaper than MSRP of 4 Core figures. And I fully expect it to be prone to discounts later in the year. By virtue of pricing, it might be a solid bet if you just want a few characters from the film. However, I think patience is the play. The tiny image of wave 4 Skeletor is seemingly sporting a tooling modification (an open left hand) and He-Man is already slated for another “barely changed” deco variant with the Amazon Exclusive Sky Sled set.

Mattel is clearly putting a LOT into this initiative, so it might be beneficial to wait and see what gets shown for the holiday push to maximize your options and reduce redundancy (because you’re going to end up with more than one of He-Man and Skeletor regardless, if you buy in).

So, with the movie figures now past street date, was the new Scareglow part of that, and the photos online were just people finding it early? Or has it been out officially for a while now? He's still not listed on Canadian Walmart, for some reason.

Chronicles Scareglow was part of the Walmart CollectorCon back in March alongside the comic derived Core Skeletor. Nominally, they should have been available online and at stores at that point. However, I’ve also heard them “reappearing” at stores in the rollout of movie merch this past week. So I’m not sure if some stores just got confused and held everything, or there was a “resupply” in conjunction with the film rollout.
With Walmart, it’s always a damned crapshoot what the hell they’ll do. He and Skeletor disappeared from the US site as well, it seems.

More stuff is leaking overseas, revealing Origins Film Roboto and wave 3 Core (meaning it SHOULD be on retail shelves by the end of June or early July).
Origins Roboto’s availability is still unknown. Film Origins are being split among retailers, so she could either end up at Mattel Creations, like Beastman, or Walmart, like TrapJaw. From the package shots, it DOES look to be an impressive figure. Also, check them retro evil robots that might be appearing in the film!

Some better looks at Wave 3 Core in package. Toy Habits called the He-Man look “tribal war paint”, but it just looks like mud to me. The bio even points to this being a “Stealth Incursion He-Man” concept, even giving him a novel grappling hook accessory. Like he was pulling a “Predator” and covering himself in mud to make himself harder to see at night. Man At Arms, even in the poor lighting here, does show some variation to the Amazon 4 Pack flavor. Like I speculated before, this one’s armor is a more “golden” hued than the bronze look of the 4 pack. The blue helmet and belt look to be a different shade as well, but better images will be needed for any solid comparisons. The wave will seemingly be rounded out by a reship of BeastMan.

The idea of a "stealth He-Man" just makes me want an Anti-Eternia He-Man, but with dark metallic blue or teal instead of the red.

Some solid images of the Deluxe Core (or “Feature”) Trap Jaw figure, including a short video of his Action Feature. The big thing to note is the significant deco differences between the promo images and this retail release. In addition to the arm being in a default “blaster mode”, the gimmick is a flip out feature for his melee weapon mode. To which, you get two options: the classic hook and a straight blade. The feature seems to work well and I appreciate that the “action” is very evocative of what we see in the trailers when Trap Jaw switches from blaster to hook. And while not film accurate (not sure if that was an intentional deco decision like the He-Man and Skeletor figures or just using outdated reference material), the purple DOES look quite sharp.
The Chronicles comparison helps show the differences between the scales and price points. And while the Chronicles figure is impressive, as I’ve said before, the “half the price” Core line is still putting forth a damn solid showing.

So I'm just going to browse the toy isle, but I was just here a few days ago. Luckily, I already know there's nothing new that I want. So I can just browse, fully confident that I can actually keep my money in my wallet.

Funny, they seemed to have originally been going for an Egyptian Pharaoh motif. It's certainly an interesting look into the development process.

Also funny, I was honestly expecting it would me my vintage that needed help standing. But nooooooo!

Listings have popped up for a 200x Cartoon Collection Deluxe Man E Faces on deck, FYI ;)

And in regards to Sketchbook releases, images have come out of Sketchbook Man At Arms, reflecting the original "Paladin" design concept.
