Maybe Wart's appearance (along with Birdo, Mouser and supposedly Clawgrip) is foreshadowing that the next 3D Mario game is based on Super Mario Bros 2, with throwable enemies, turnips, and no Koopas, Goombas or Bowser!

That would be a dream game!

(Get it? A DREAM? Anyone? Is this thing on?)

Honestly, I think that the SMB2 gameplay would work so well in 3D. It's a shame it will never happen.

If I was a bit better at game design and programming, I'd do it myself. Granted given Nintendo's litigious nature I'd have to come up with four playable characters, various enemies and a world on my own, lol.

You just have to have Bashful Boys, Sniffles, Sparrets, Rob-ombs, Pokers, and Spectros with bosses Avio, Ratter, Triclaude, Grill Guy, Pinchgrip and Boil.

Finally, a new generation will be learning to Do The Mario. Just make sure they don't miss it, because the late Captain Lou Albano said if they're not watching the show, they'll turn into a Goomba.

I guess that is another way to watch it in addition to its presence on many multiple streaming services, including free ones like Tubi and Pluto TV

Oh.

Oh yeah.

Sorry, I was thinking about another message he had about what happens if you do or don't do something.

How would Zelda, Link and Ganondorf fit into Smash Bros movie considering they went live-action with that franchise.

Not like Smash doesn't already mash up different art and character design styles.

Yea, but I just can't see them going that route. Granted the movies are being made by different companies. Sony Pictures is making Zelda and Universal makes the Mario universe movies. We haven't seen any hint of Kirby yet and you can't have Smash without Kirby.

Caught a matinee.
It was fine. I enjoyed it, the Easter Eggs are definitely aimed to me. But I'm not sure it's a stronger film than the first. Feels more like a series of vignettes strung together than having a cohesive plot through line. Fox was fun, though I'm not sure he added much to the film as a whole. Which pretty much encompasses a LOT: Yoshi is fun, but doesn't drastically change the character dynamics that much. The SMB2 villain crew was fun, but weren't THAT necessary to moving the plot forward. Fox is fun, but you could have replaced him with any number of characters or ideas. There's references to Galaxy, Sunshine, and Odyssey, but many feel like they're there just for the sake of the references rather than any meaningful plot value.

There's a LOT of fun "bits", but it felt like they had a couple of 30 minute films and a few shorts and kind of mashed it all together to get a full feature. That said, it still looks gorgeous, the action sequences were brisk and featured some really novel power up choreography. Probably worth a matinee 3D showing if you got the youngins'. Two post-credits scenes, first after the "fancy credits" is fun. The last one is a clear tease for the next film with a character reveal.
The Illumination Studio tag at the start was pure joy. I enjoyed it more than I probably should have.

Okay, my wife and I saw it earlier. I don't think anything following here should really be spoilerish, at least if you've followed the marketing.

The skinny: If you liked the first one, you'll probably like this. If you didn't, well...

For what it's worth, we liked the first, and while we might need to sit on it a bit, right now I think we liked this one even more.

Storywise, it's no Thousand Year Door. But it's no Sticker Star, either. I think the first game's origin story for the Bros. helps nudge it out over this in that regard.

That said, it was just a fun adventure from beginning to end. I'd say that where it lacks in story, it makes up for in character interactions -- stuff that just wouldn't really work so well in the games.

The soundtrack is all game music, or music like the games. None of the insert stuff, which didn't bother me before (it was a whopping five minutes total of an hour-46 minute movie). I think it fit the last one more, but probably would have been tougher to justify here.

I really enjoyed the appearance of Wart and his minions here, and I hope it leads to something more from that side of the franchise. I'm not holding my breath, but you never know.

Same for Fox McCloud. Oh my god, that stuff was so good, and might be some of my favorite parts. I hope Nintendo manages to capitalize on this, and not screw it up this time. I was thinking of putting away the Starlink Arwing I have displayed on my desk, just sort of redecorating/reorganizing stuff, but now it's staying put for the time being.

Incidentally, his role here reminds me a little of Donkey Kong in the first. Not 1:1, by any means, but enough that I kinda wonder... they said DK was going to get his own movie spun off of the last one, didn't they? I could see them following on Star Fox in a similar way here.

(I'll also take a section of Super Nintendo World.)

Oh, and of course, Yoshi. This made me fall in love with the little -- well, not so little -- guy all over again. I was okay not getting one of the popcorn buckets shaped like him, but even at $32, I'm feeling some regret now, even though I know it'd just sit around here.

I won't say why, but I bet this movie recontextualizes a lot of fan works. I wonder if there will be any RetCanon at play, or if it was always meant to be this way?

Two stingers on this one, so don't leave before the credits are done.

My affinity for Mario has been on the wane over the last decade, give or take, but I think these movies are helping remind me of what I love about the franchise beyond the gameplay. It definitely tickles my nostalgia in that way, portraying the characters as I remember them (more or less) from when I was a kid, but has kinda felt a little lost over time.
