Okay, my wife and I saw it earlier. I don't think anything following here should really be spoilerish, at least if you've followed the marketing.
The skinny: If you liked the first one, you'll probably like this. If you didn't, well...
For what it's worth, we liked the first, and while we might need to sit on it a bit, right now I think we liked this one even more.
Storywise, it's no Thousand Year Door. But it's no Sticker Star, either. I think the first game's origin story for the Bros. helps nudge it out over this in that regard.
That said, it was just a fun adventure from beginning to end. I'd say that where it lacks in story, it makes up for in character interactions -- stuff that just wouldn't really work so well in the games.
The soundtrack is all game music, or music like the games. None of the insert stuff, which didn't bother me before (it was a whopping five minutes total of an hour-46 minute movie). I think it fit the last one more, but probably would have been tougher to justify here.
I really enjoyed the appearance of Wart and his minions here, and I hope it leads to something more from that side of the franchise. I'm not holding my breath, but you never know.
Same for Fox McCloud. Oh my god, that stuff was
so good, and might be some of my favorite parts. I hope Nintendo manages to capitalize on this, and not screw it up this time. I was thinking of putting away the Starlink Arwing I have displayed on my desk, just sort of redecorating/reorganizing stuff, but now it's staying put for the time being.
Incidentally, his role here reminds me a little of Donkey Kong in the first. Not 1:1, by any means, but enough that I kinda wonder... they said DK was going to get his own movie spun off of the last one, didn't they? I could see them following on Star Fox in a similar way here.
(I'll also take a section of Super Nintendo World.)
Oh, and of course, Yoshi. This made me fall in love with the little -- well, not so little -- guy all over again. I was okay not getting one of the popcorn buckets shaped like him, but even at $32, I'm feeling some regret now, even though I know it'd just sit around here.
I won't say why, but I bet this movie recontextualizes a lot of fan works. I wonder if there will be any
RetCanon at play, or if it was always meant to be this way?
Two stingers on this one, so don't leave before the credits are done.
My affinity for Mario has been on the wane over the last decade, give or take, but I think these movies are helping remind me of what I love about the franchise beyond the gameplay. It definitely tickles my nostalgia in that way, portraying the characters as I remember them (more or less) from when I was a kid, but has kinda felt a little lost over time.
