unluckiness

Somehow still sane

A regular Transformer, yeah, but what about a Transtector? Like, if Chromedome in Headmasters died, wouldn't his transtector body still function in car mode?
As I understand, transtectors aren’t really alive and are machines that serve as extensions of the Headmasters, so probably not affected by their corresponding Master dying.

IDW1 had Orion Pax using his dead cop coworker's motorcycle mode in an emergency, and Team Rodimus escaped from Necroworld using a dead Decepticon as a space ship. They also had Devastator formed with Scrapper's corpse as a leg, and later Defensor used Ambulon the same way.

So depending on the writer, maybe, but it's viewed as morbid at best.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

Hell, the lore for prime was that the decepticon warship was actually dead trypticon. And animated had brain dead omega supreme in statis as their ship.

I could see it being dependent on HOW dead the Transformer is. If the body is functional but the mind is gone / unconscious, then it can be operated by whatever secondary controls are available, which probably varies from bot-to-bot. If the body itself is dead, then it's no different than any other broken machine.

Heck, even the original cartoon had an episode where it happens.
