Got APC Bolt or modified Prime Dreadwing. The Legacy mold was fiddly and a disappointment. How’s this guy?

This is a slightly upsized knockoff of the PRID Dreadwing mold. I don’t have my old Dreadwing to compare since the thing selfdestructed but this is definitely chunkier. It retains the same articulation in robot mode, namely, all the major points except the waist due to transformation. This release adds ankle tilts but these are cosmetic more than anything, as only the front “toe” moves. The hands can open and close now with the fingers being a single piece. the PRID line Voyagers were generally solid apart from the crappy light up weapon blocks and this is no exception. For colors, he features a deep metallic blue that’s a bit lighter than the Hasbro PRID toy, gunmetal gray and gold. It’s complemented by red and solver detailing. Paintwork’s clean and durable enough. Aces for aesthetics. Joints are all nice and tight but the transformation joint for the hands are ridiculously tight.

He comes with his sword and his gun for weapons, as well as two of his signature bombs and a detonator. Despite the bayonet on his cannon looking like it should be the sword attached to it, they are separate pieces. They do the part although I feel they are a bit oversized. The bombs attach via 5mm pegs and the detonator can loosely fit in his hand. He also comes with two different heads with alternate faces. A smirking face and an angry face. They are differently molded from the neutral head and are actually the slightest bit smaller. Angry head is on the first pic and smirking head can be seen on the Starscream pic.

Transformation is similar to the original toy with a few tweaks. The hands can now fold into the forearms instead of sticking out the back of the jet. The crotch splits into three parts instead of the original toy’s two, making it more stable, as the third piece locks the halves together. Lastly, the hinge that easily breaks on the original is a differently molded piece, probably to address the base mold’s breakages. The gummy soft plastic pieces on the PRID toy are all hard plastic here, making transformation smoother.

Plane mode is mostly similar to the base toy but the upsizing is more apparent in this mode, it’s the same but without visible robot hands. He has two 5mm pegs on each wing and on the plane’s dorsal aspect. No complaints here.

Overall, for the price of a modern leader, Bolt is a worthy package and definitely superior to the mediocre Legacy Leader. It’s enough to get me to consider the teased Skyquake version and makes me crave a G1 Skyquake recolor.

Now I'm considering getting him, I have two copies of the original figure, on the first one, the back piece, just fell off, I'm currently unsure where my other copy is and his general state as I just realised that he not on my TFP shelf but then neither is the legacy figure who I do know where he is!

I have Gear Factory Gale version on the way and I was waiting to see if I like him enough to order Skyquake but as he seems pretty solid from your review and others I may just go ahead and preorder him from ShowZ.

I’m considering that one mainly for the illin’ gatling gun. We’ve seen a sample but waiting on final colors. Hope he turns out closer to military drab green than pea soup

Yeah, I dig that. How oversized is it? Not by a ton, I hope. I'd been eyeing their TFCC Rampage but the size is a bit off-putting.

The old Skyquake is currently possibly Schrodinger's Self-Destructed Toy, but it was kinda meh enough to need a fresh take on anyway.

I have other members of the APC Toys Prime crew and they are amazing. I have been on the fence with this one since I have both Legacy Skyquake and Dreadwing, but I'll be damned if this one doesn't scratch the itch more than those 2 do. I also have the original Prime release, but he's always been one of my least favorite molds of that line due to fiddliness. Now I don't even transform him.

Got Luckycat's Bruticus boxset in. I don't normally go for these novelty SD things but the fact they transform convinced me to give it a shot. Best way I can describe them are Blokees but they transform. These guys are surpisingly detailed and articulated considering the size. Everyone has balljoint heads, shoulders, biceps, elbows, waists, and knees. They all have ankles too, but except for Vortex, they're just cosmetic tilts. Some color choices I don't agree with, like Onslaught's sky blue, Blast Off's fecal brown and Brawl's head but overall, these are aesthetically charming and handle well. Fully approved.

Everyone can transform into their G1 altmodes but chibified. Brawl's treads are static and don't have the little wheels to roll but everything is functional on these guys. I like them. They remind me of Advance Wars units.

Bruticus is surprisingly stable and well-articulated. He stays together well and the transfomation is really smart, managing to hide five oversized heads, He has universal shoulders and hips, although, the hips may be somewhat restricted by the crotchplates. Waist turns and the big head is on a balljoint. Ankles can tilt any which way on balljoints and the wrists swivel. Fingers are full articulated with two hinges and a ball joint on each finger and a hinge and a balljoint on the thumb. Despite the big, heavy head, he balances well. Some weird choices like the black for the hands and feet surface but overall, it's a spot-on Bruticus. He also comes with a toon Blast Off chest but I forgor. He wields a gun formed from combining the weapons of all 5 Combaticons. Unfortunately, Vortex's blue gun kind of ruins the coordination. The head has a magnet-activated LED light-up feature but I have no idea what kind of batteries it takes. The eyes also have an iridescent coating over them that helps keep them lively even when the eyes aren't lit.

The kibble can combine into a goomba-looking thing. It's more for the convenience of not having any separate parts than anything you'd want to display. It lets me reenact that one scene from the cartoon though!

Overall, a great set that accomplishes everything it needs to in one complete package. Not the cheapest set but I think it justifies the value between the quality, the three modes and the various display and play options.
