Oof. I didn't save the individual layers, so I will have to recreate that green from scratch.

Oh well. I have insomnia anyway, and this is fun.

The Player 2 colors (also for Transmetals) were such obvious redeco possibilities. You'd think there would've been some coordination between the game people and Hasbro.

I bet if there was a fighting game now, that'd be part of the fun.

Well since we hace SSGE, that means they could technically make these and put them there. Even if just exclusives.

Which one, though? The N64 and PS1 Transmetals games were two very different games from each other.

I'm referring to the Playstation game myself, as we never got the N64. Still, the bar set by the first BW game on Playstation is low enough that I would guess the N64 game clears it too.

I might have had the first game on PC. I thought I just had a demo because I never figured out how to make the levels end, but from its reputation I'm wondering if that's just how the game is.

I'd love to play it again for science but I never got it working on anything past Windows 98.

Transmetals PS was so much fun. A fighting game felt so right.

The Armada game was great, too-- I wish we'd gotten toys of the Decepticlones and new Mini-Cons, but again, production/release schedules wouldn't've lined up even if they had wanted.

ANYWAY

That was kind of the era where redecoes felt more special, in a way. We just didn't get them at mass retail as often, and they were usually new characters. Even in Beast Machines, where we finally got legitimate army-builders-- we got Sonic Attack Jet, and that was about it.

Maybe that'd be a fun team project--mock up a modern toyline expansion on BW/BM-- multiple redecos, mission-themed vs. packs. (If they sold those toys/molds today kind of thing.)

(Probably more frustrating than fun, though. Look at these nest toys that will never exist!)

I wouldn't, honestly.

Maybe now, but back then? Not so much.

Incidentally, funny that this comes up, as I found this recently when putting together the newest Warp Zone for Nintendo Force magazine...

Sounds about right. Matt McMuscles covers both as part of his The Worst Fighting Game series (the verdict is that they're decent/average).

Man, the gaming landscape was so, SO different. Everything was.

The N64 version must have been very different from PS1 because "confusing and clunky" is not what I remember.
They were two completely different games, yes. Different graphics, different controls, somewhat different character rosters, different gameplay modes, different everything. The only things they really shared in common were the things from the source material. The general consensus was that the PS1 game was the more favored of the two.

I wish these games were better documented. Sadly the people who know how to rip game assets and the people interested in these games don't seem to have any overlap.
Probably just a matter of finding the right person.

I bet there are people who rip games out there that like Transformers, but don't even know this one exists, or just never thought about it.

I would do it myself if there were some go-to tool I'd just need to learn, but that's just not how early 3D games work. If you're lucky, some nerd out there has made a tool that's specific to the game you want and sometimes works. If you're unlucky, go learn to use a hex editor or give up.
