I mixed the box error, the actual prototype and a custom of 2022:

Somehow, the Universe redeco looked good in predominantly blue.

Well, blurple. And it was offset by different enough colors in different enough proportions that it didn't really look like G1 Soundwave, whereas the current effort is to map the colors more closely. It did look quite nice though, I'm with you there. (I don't recall if I ever got that Space Case. Tailend waves of Universe were rough to find as they'd shifted to being store exclusives I think.)

But yeah, I think CoffeeHorse's take distributes the colors better (maybe a bit more blue on the chest). It's tricky because the direct mapping onto the body makes an overwhelmingly one note blue altmode, AND the missile is also almost entirely blue, compounding that. The robot mode on GXE18's doesn't look too bad, would be better with a silver waist and upper legs; however, we then run into the same problem in altmode. CoffeeHorse's lets the colors breathe a bit more at the expense of the altmode being not very blue; but then, this isn't a G1 Soundwave altmode anyway so there's some more freedom there.

I just glanced at my MW StalkerWave - waist and thighs are pretty much completely hidden in vehicle mode, so that does provide a way to break up solid grey or solid blue.

I know Tape Deck Soundwave's shoulder missile was the same dark blue as most of the rest of his body, but StalkerWave's missile looks like it's a different batch of plastic entirely - it doesn't have to be the same color as anything else.

The coloring for the head really helps sell it as Soundwave in both cases. I do like GXE18's version, and CoffeeHorse's version screams Soundwave, too - even with lots of gray. It's a bit on the Classic Space side of things.
