At today's State of Play, Sony got to reveal the newest project from preservationists at Digital Eclipse (Atari 50, Tetris Forever):
The Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection! Featuring most of the classic games (though, not all have been revealed), along with numerous port variations. The arcade and console versions all sport online functionality. In addition to the games, there will be a trove of behind the scenes material, including documentation and videos.
The current title list:
  • Mortal Kombat – 1992: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear
  • Mortal Kombat II -1993: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, 32X
  • Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES, Genesis
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES
  • Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997: Arcade
  • Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001: Game Boy Advance
  • Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002: Game Boy Advance
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003: Game Boy Advance
  • ???
I'm surprised to see the GBA Deadly Alliance and TE make the cut. To me, you're better off "cutting things off" at MK4/Gold as that seemed to be the end of the "Klassic era" of the franchise. I'm hoping MK Mythologies makes the cut as well, since it was such a big release at the franchise's peak.

Day one buy for Switch 2. Is Gold confirmed yet or just the Arcade version of 4? Either way, this is quite the collectionn!

And yeah, I do hope the Mythologies makes the cut. But even if not, This is going to be a must get.

From the looks of it, i‘m betting Klassic Kollection in this case might end up containing everything up to Armageddon. I mean, MK9 was NRSs ’reboot’, so everything before that is technically Klassic.

Also, they made GBA MK games?

That was the only thing in that entire live that was worth a damn
AND Im not even an MK fan I own one game in the series (MK for the PS1) and only beaten MK4 in arcade
But still thats a huge swath of games under one tin and thats worth it

I'm a little disappointed at some of the omissions there, like Mortal Kombat on SEGA CD. Or other versions of MK4, or MK Trilogy.

Hopefully they include some sort of "won't read your inputs and cheat" mode or something.

I agree. MK Trilogy is a definate must (both PSX and N64), and I guess MK on the Sega CD was possibly omitted because of the file size (and maybe some issues with the Mortal Monday music video, like the use of the likeness of the actors who were in the video), and MK Gold I agree should be in, but I guess was omitted due to emulation issues or some other issues.

We can but hope.

its funny to think that out of all the MK games, I’ve onky ever played four. MK 3, 4, Shaolin Monks and the MK9 reboot game

I also once partly read an oddball mashup fanfic that smashed MK and Tekken together.

Funny thing, on PS5 I'm able to put the Collection on my wishlist but don't have the option to actually preorder. On the Switch, I can't even find it to wishlist it. But Amazon has both a regular and Deluxe edition up for preorder. So...yeah...got mine preordered. Not sure if it'll be a game actually on the cart or if it'll be a key cart. The picture seems to imply everything will be on the cart. But at least the deluxe comes with a steelbook and other goodies. So I'll risk it. Not like the online stores are giving me much of a choice at the moment.

Out tomorrow. I lamented that it won't have MK Gold, but I do have it for the Dreamcast. So just base MK 4 ought to be good.

Not sure how I feel about playing Sub Zero. I like watching the cinematic and bloopers on YouTube. But having briefly played the N64 version once upon a time, I can confirm the game itself was crap.

So I don't know if this is a me thing or if I can get anyone who agrees with me, but the PS5 controller just doesn't feel good to me with retro games. And I'm not just talking about this Mortal Kombat collection. I noticed the same thing with the Cowabunga Collection, Contra Collection, Castlevania Collection...retro games just don't feel good on the PS5 controller.

And I'm sure it's the controller because I play the exact same collections on the Switch 2 pro controller and it feels great.

At the same time, it seems limited to retro games, because any current game I play I can't imagine a better controller than the PS5.

Just me?

Anyway, first impressions of the collection itself...

I'm glad it has so many of the ports. In all honesty, with the arcade perfect ports, I can't imagine putting too much time into the console ports. But for historical preservation and the occasional gits and shiggles, I'm glad they're here.

Same with Myhologies SubZero, I don't foresee putting a lot of time into this. After playing the first level last night, I remember why I used to think it was crap. But still, for historical preservation and the occasional gits and shiggles, I'm glad it's here.

I'm not sure why they chose a version of Trilogy that has load times. Honestly, I think the N64 version looked just as good. But that's a nitpick and this is still fun to play.

MK4 looks awesome with its resolution cranked up. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't play it this way. I do still wish they would've included Gold, but this still plays great and I can at least take comfort in the fact that I'm one of the lucky bastards who owns a Dreamcast.

One thing I am running into that annoys me. In the music player for MK1, I see the console versions, but I can't seem to find the arcade version of the music.
