When customizing, I usually go with the toon as the baseline but I add on details as necessary for visual impact. Usually go with toy based detail or color layouts as I prefer there be some basis for the deviation from accuracy if that makes any sense. I sometimes just make up detailing whole cloth as well, especially when it comes to character who don’t have many appearances, are from the live action movies or only showed up in the Marvel comics.
