From Takara Tomy's X account, we have our first look at several upcoming Studio Series figures, including our first image (doctored though it may be) of SS86 Megatron.

The picture is posterized and blackened to hide details, but we can still get a decent look at upcoming figures including (from left to right)

86 Series Scavenger
86 Series Mixmaster
TF One Starscream
TF One Elita One
86 Megatron

I really don't see how they are going to do a SS86 Megatron right. Without turning into his iconic pistol, it's just not G1 Megatron. My only suggestion on a way around that was for a Megatron that turns into Galvatron.

I don't really mind that he doesn't turn into a gun anymore. I'm willing to let them fudge on this one character's alt mode if the only other choice is that we don't get a Studio Series Megatron. As long as the robot mode is on-point, that is (which it appears to be).

That's always been my own gripe. Make G1 Megatron a tank all you want. But it's no longer a fit for Studio Series 86. The label is meaningless.

That said, in regard to doing something that was never in the movie... it's hardly the first time a character has been given a previously-unseen alternate mode while in SS. It might be the first time the alternate mode is something entirely different from what was on-screen, but I won't even swear to that at this point.

Why not release the toy in another line? Why do we need one specifically in Studio Series 86 at all?

Yeah, but usually in those cases its something like "it came from the design documents" or something, where while it wasn't in the movie, there had still been something to pull from that was still directly connected to the movie, or some of the BBM Cybertronian models that never had alt modes so something needed to be created for them. But 86 Megs has an alt mode. An alt mode he transforms into in the movie. To me he's no longer SS86 Megatron if he doesn't have that alt mode.
