Why do yanks even call it that? Aside from occasionally punting the ball, it’s just a bunch of discount Warhammer dudes tackling each other. It’d be like calling Football/Soccer Handball because the goalie throws the ball sometimes.

I even question if the ball even counts as a ball.

I'm betting a lot of alcohol was involved, but that doesn't narrow it down much.

Jehovah Witness update: This time his buddy stayed in the car and kept the engine running. They obviously planned on making a quick exit. They still have not gotten through their pitch and said who they're affiliated with.

At this point I'm going to miss these guys once they finally give up. I should have just turned them down and saved everyone the hassle, but I don't get to talk to people very often.

if y'all want the genuine reason why we call the sport here 'football', it's the same reason why - in addition to the 'football' most people internationally think when they hear the term - you also got aussie rules football, gaelic football, and rugby football.

they all descended from various types of 'football' that were played at english universities in the 18th century (yes, i am aware that there have been sports called 'football' dating back centuries, but this is when they started to codify actual rules and jive for the sport)

like you look up what's considered the first american football game ever (an 1869 game between princeton and rutgers), the rules they used for the game were based on the football association's 1863 rules - which are now the codified rules for soccer (hence why it's also called 'association football'), so if you got a time machine and watched the game, you'd think it was just soccer and not american football.

but eventually universities and stuff started to instead base their rules off of rugby (still a code of football) and that eventually became the standard base on which american football rules evolved from and became its own sport rather than just a variation on rugby. (ever wonder why the sport has 'touchdowns' despite there being no touching down involved? it's because we adapted the concept from the rules of rugby, where the analogous concept is known as a 'try', which does require you to ground the ball in the opponent's goal area - and you had to do that in the early years of rugby-based american football as well. it's also why you have the thing where the team that scored tries to get an extra point by kicking the ball through the goal posts - that's the whole reason why it was called a 'try' in rugby, it was a 'try at goal'. you got the ball into the opponent's goal area and touched it onto the ground? your team got a chance at getting a goal and scoring a point, basically)

Ugh! That feeling when you're on vacation and want to sleep in, but your body won't let you sleep past the time it normally wakes up!

But then you get to have your first coffee of the day.

I mean, I get the first one of the day anyway, but if I wake up early, that does mean more time for more sequential cups.

I'm reading Neuromancer now. I want to do the whole Sprawl trilogy before moving on. But I did snag Snow Crash for Kindle so I don't miss a beat once I finish the Sprawl trilogy.

My brain has learned that when it thinks I should get out of bed but I don't want to, it can play the sound of my phone ringing to make me look. I feel betrayed, but at least it's using this power for good so far. I did need to get up.

Know the feeling, my phone is doulbling as my alarm clock

My internal clock is pretty good, and I'm a light sleeper. I used to take quick naps on long public transit commutes to work. I almost always woke up before my stop.

Currently, I basically Pavloved myself into waking up when TMM does, and again when he's getting ready to leave just so I can get more hugs. If TMM has the day off, then I wake up just the first time. On the flip side, sometimes I have trouble falling asleep again afterwards.
