Generations 2027: No More Primes! It is the Age of Evolution!

I got excited about Thunderwing and forgot there was an existing thread.

Perhaps a mod can merge.

If I could make a suggestion... it might be easier for people to find this if the title had the line name, Age of Evolution.

Well, guess I'm free from keeping up the full list and first post this time around. Lol.

Anyway. Hoping Thunderwing is cool.

Evan Brooks has clarified, after a post by Nate Purswell yesterday, the general “status” of the other side of Generations. With it being confirmed that Studio Series will be expanding to the general G1 cartoon (and a lengthy rumor history of comic-inspired figures on deck), Evan Brooks clarified what Generations’ direction will be:
Studio Series is evolving to encompass all forms of the TF entertainment, such as the G1 cartoon with a goal of trying to make figures that match their on screen representations. Legacy is the sandbox where new characters and form factors are being explored as seen with the 13 Primes. Hasbro Pulse is our online store and the only place you can pre-order our Made to order items for now and as we had decided to make this our first Made to order, it had to be through Hadbro Pulse.

I am going to take a cautious optimism approach. One of the things that always kept me involved in Transformers was the fact, even if you got the same character, Hasbro was more willing to take the design in different directions (like the upcoming Shockwhale). My cynical side says that things aren’t going to change much except we’ll see “toy flavor” of the usual suspects in Legacy/Generations, while Studio Series will see redeco/retools in media reflective flavors.

Nate Purswell said that Studio Series is largely planned out to 2028, so I’d assume year 2 of Age of Evolution is in the same boat (possibly some 2029 since it doesn’t have to be left as open to new media projects).

I rarely care for Sunbow decos, so if Generations is how we get G1 toy decos out there... I'm fine with that.

That being said... say what you will about the Thirteen as a concept, they did get creative with a number of them. So if you're looking for fresh stuff, well, there is a track record in that direction.

Well, I never once thought I'd see a return to gold plastic, touting a 'new improved formula' and restarting the 'wait a few years to see if it self destructs' clock.

If they follow through on Legacy being more experimental while Studio Series handles media accurate stuff, I'm not going to complain. That sounds like good news to me.

People are already dooming about "Oh noes, I guess no more movieverse bots in Studio Series" while Hasbro is going all in on the AOE Dinobots of all things. We're fine.

I hope you're right, and that the segment of the fandom that wouldn't shut up about getting all the Dinobots and Leader Class Isn't Enough, Muh Scale (and more generally the segment that embraced Bay stuff and AOE at the time) is enough to sustain multiple Small Titan (?) class releases in that vein. I suppose Hasbro would/could just do them all regardless just to drive and populate x Titans in the rotation.

I think it's also fair to have a bit of concern, considering 86 has steadily muscled its way to a bigger and bigger place at the table, joined by video game designs and whatnot further expanding and thus diluting the focus, with the original remit of live-action movie Generations-ing being more sprinkled across a year and only getting more monentum when there is a movie to become the Generations level toyline for. And with 84 being the reliable, strong, and sure seller that it is, and now all pretense of it not being a/the tentpole shed in favor of this explicit commitment, that's an even bigger place at the table.

Of course that's all just worry, we know literally nothing at this point. I'm just hoping we continue with the juggling and alternating we've had in recent years. Revisit some designs that hadn't been updated yet (as was done with TLK Barricade, DOTM Hatchet). Introduce new, never before made things (like the all-new-mold Stinger was in the very first wave). Some concept stuff (KSI Widow). (I just hope it's all better than Evasion Op and AOE Bee currently look.) And some much-needed package refreshes (Lockdown, and non-box set/multipack rereleases of Jazz and Ironhide). Maybe even eventually redo some with opaque plastic (Lockdown, Jazz, Barricade) so my hypertension meds have one less thing to manage.

Legacy/etc being the broader scope line just makes sense, and I hope they lean into it. There are many corners of latter G1 that were toy only and barely, if at all, represented in the US show (idk if Studio Series is going to be ALL cartoons/anime now). (Toy versions of Studio Series stuff still has a home in Retro, or another subline imprint or capsule, maybe; or bring back Selects.) And then there's 30+ more years of the franchise in various formats that can populate it.

AOTP was pretty solid overall in terms of revisiting a good mix across generations (Sky-Byte, Red Alert) while also giving us something we'd never gotten before (Liege Maximo, Micronus Prime). They've done a great job overall with the Thirteen, and a similar commitment to experimenting and mixing it up at the core, balanced with diverse delegates from across that history, would make for a very interesting and textured followup. Even the "Age of Evolution" and Megatron mounting a resistance against the Primes is already a novel focus for a trilogy segment/line, and I really look forward to it.

It's possible that they've been wanting to do more creative stuff this whole time, but they didn't have the structure to do it without people complaining "Why didn't they just do it right?" That's been a struggle for 20 years now. Some designs have been highly faithful while others have gone on weird flights of fancy that sometimes work and sometimes don't, and there isn't always any obvious rhyme or reason for what gets the faithful treatment and what doesn't. The inconsistency often bothered me more than the designs themselves.

Studio Series being the media accurate stuff and Legacy being more experimental is a clearer structure than we've had. If the concern is that the G1 toon is going to take over Studio Series, I fail to see how that's any different from the current state of things. What is different is Legacy having a mandate to specifically not do that. If they follow through on that end of the bargain, this is good news.

This fandom loves its doom and gloom.

Thing is, they were already struggling to adhere to the "movie only" concept. Hound only shows up in a few background shots and Windcharger and Wheeljack only show up dead, but they all got SS '86 toys. So if just going "hug it, it's SS G1 now" lets them just do what they were going to do anyway just with less hoop jumping, so be it.

Thing is, this news seems like it could lead to more diversity in SS, rather than just G1 all the time. They've been teasing a comics SS subline, with IDW and Marvel specific versions of characters named. If that does well enough to justify more releases, you could toss in DW, Skybound, maybe even some Devil's Due stuff.

Granted, a lot of this stuff is G1 adjacent, but a lot of it is also pretty distinct in its own right.

And if SS G1 is on the table, that opens up the possibility of SS UT, SS Beast Era, etc...

The only real issue I see with this approach is that the live action fans have to see their line increasingly divided up, but at the same time Hasbro is committed to a full line of Titan Bayverse Dinobots so I think it's safe to say they're committed to keeping that aspect around as well.

In all fairness, a pretty sizeable chunk of the live action cast has been done already. Aside from the rest of the AOE Autobots, who is even left?

Evan has openly acknowledged those two, saying Hasbro is willing to make them, but it's a matter of timing for when would be best to release them.

Triple changers with color change thermal paint so they can go from their cars to the combined ice cream truck and look right as both! And while I'm dreaming, a Pretender Jazz from that recent short mold with a Pretender Bumblebee from any recent mold he has, they all would work.
